Has anyone with an AIAX running AX mags ever had an issue with the bolt running over the top of rounds in the mag?

One of my three mags has this issue, only when there are two rounds (or less) in the mag. This is with 6.5x47L. The rounds go nose-up a bit, the follower doesn't push them back up into place, then the bolt goes over the top of the round. It seems like either a weak spring or feed lip issue, but the space between the feed lips was the same as the other mags (0.630" at the rear of the mag).

AI told me to send the mag back, but I wanted to see if there was an easy fix or if anyone has had this issue.

Here are a couple pics. Does everyone's AX run the bolt over an empty mag? My AT with AW mag stopped the bolt but the AX doesn't.

Magazine spring loosing its tension? You may want to swap the spring between your magazines to test this hypothesis.

All the mags are factory new, but I did try that and the offending mag still had the issue even with a different spring and follower.

The weird thing is, I sent the mag back to AI and they couldn't replicate the issue on their rifle. So I'm not sure what the issue is. Thankfully they are still sending me a new mag, which says good things about their customer service, so I'll see if the new mag is problem-free.

Only time i have that issue is when i cram 11 rounds in and its only the first round. Have you tried AW mags?

The only time I have had the issue is when there are one or two rounds in the mag. I haven't tried an AW mag but if the problem persists I will borrow one from a buddy.

@samb300 Any more info on this (and has it been resolved with the replacement mag)? This seems like an issue I encountered this weekend, but it only happens with one specific mag (which I'm about to request a replacement for).

I sent the mag to AINA and they couldn’t replicate the issue on their test rifle(s). I pressed them and they were willing to send me a replacement mag, which functioned 100%.

That’s the only mag I’ve used in my AT or AX that ever had that issue. That’s why I label my mags with a paint pen in case it happens, and I always bring 3 mags to a match. If I have an issue with one I quarantine it and use the other two.

That'll work. My bad mag definitely has some vertical play vs. my other mags. I'll update if anything interesting comes up once the mag is looked at.

I have this issue with a mag as well only it happens on a full mag (no, there's not 11 in there) usually. Another one doesn't do it. Interestingly enough, the one that doesn't do it, which is also brand new but didn't come with the rifle, has a noticeably weaker spring in it I think. The rounds will slide forward in that mag if you slap the front of the mag, the one they don't move forward in when you do that is the one with the issue. The only difference is the one that has an issue is the sage one that came with the rifle. The other one with no issue is black.

I have the same issue on my AT with 6.5x47 but not with the 308 or 260. 2 different mags have the same issue. Funny thing is I sent the rifle back when I 1st got it for a different issue and the mag issue, AI couldn't replicate the problem, lost my mag, send me a new mag and the issue is still there. Happens 10-20% of the time. Also sometimes I have rounds popping off when I insert the magazines but again it only happens with the 6.5x47. I'm going to start messing with the mag lips to see if it will make a difference.
