I bought my Remington SPS-V .308 back in January. I immediately threw it into an AICS stock and topped it with a Nightforce. A few months ago I sent my bolt to Kampfeld Custom in Michigan for a flute job and Badger knob installation. I also installed a Jewel trigger and had the stock inletted by a friend to fit the jewel properly. I also Duracoated the flip-up part of my scope caps to match the stock and increased the length of pull with an AI spacer kit.

After working up a good load it has shot 1/2 MOA consistently and I was ecstatic about that...it even got me a third place trophy at a 1,000 yard match. But three weeks ago, I decided I wanted more. So I gave my rifle to a local and very reputable gunsmith named Larry Marsh, ordered a barrel from Bruno's (great service by the way) and a muzzle brake, and now I have:

Blueprinted Remington 700 Action
26" Krieger SS #9 Heavy Varmint, 1-12 twist, threaded 5/8x24, target crown
1" Shrewd Varmint Brake (Rear is turned down to match muzzle OD of .950")
.308 Match Chamber
Jewel Trigger set at 1lb.
Badger Knob
Fluted Bolt
NF NXS 5.5-22x56 NPR-1

Barrel and brake were bead blasted. I love that look. I haven't been able to do any sort of load developing as of yet, deer gun season started today in Ohio so I am tied up with that for the next few days.

I did break the barrel in on Sunday with some FGMM. That went well and the SS barrel is much better than my old barrel as far as copper fouling is concerned, there was virtually none. I shot three 5 shot groups at 100yds, but I pulled one round on each one!! I guess I was too excited or maybe it was because I haven't shot in almost 2 months, I dunno. Either way, the good news is that the other 4 rounds in each group were all in between .200"-.300" and the fliers were way out there so it's looking real good! The brake is also very efficient, it shoots like a baby now, no muzzle jump and a significant reduction in felt recoil...it feels like a completely new rifle.

Re: Finally! My First Custom-Built Rifle. PICS!!!

Nice rig...I would duracoat it though. But that is just me. I have never been a fan of stainless unless the action, barrel, rings, scope and everything is like that...and of course if it isn't intended as a tactical rifle. Bench, or match guns in stainless are fine, and very easy to care for.

Cerakote it.

Re: AICS Custom Build Complete. PICS!!!

If you can I'd 2nd the Cerakote. I plan on coating my rifle in that down the rd. I have a fluted bolt also. And have thought about doing a different color for the flutes. But thats just my thoughts.

Thanks for the compliment!!

Also, I know they're high, I used to have lower rings

(the first picture shows my rifle with the lower rings)

Everyone always tells me the same thing when I post pics up of my rifle. I can only go one size lower with the Nightforce rings because of the 56mm objective on the NXS. The third picture also makes the scope seem like its wayy up there. But there's a reason that I have high rings......

I have a high cheek weld and when I had the lower rings I had to keep my cheek piece all the way down and I found myself smashing my face into it in order to get the proper sight alignment/picture. So I went with the current rings. Now I have some adjustability with my cheek piece and my face doesn't hurt after a day of shooting.

I thought about coating the flutes in the bolt too. But with the flutes and the Jewel, the stainless barrel/brake don't look too bad...They accent each other. I am, however, going to clear coat my bolt with some Duracoat SL (self-lubricating) as I have only a couple tiny rust spots in the flutes.

Can't argue with that.. if it works, it works!

Nice rig.

If I do coat it, it will be Duracoat. It's what I've always worked with in the past and everything is set up at the shop right now for Duracoating...it'd take me about a half hour to prep and spray. I don't have an oven large enough to bake a barreled action unfortunately or else I'd try the Cerakote. Plus the barrel is already blasted so all I'd have to do is degrease it, spray it, and wait for it to cure and I'm done.

Thanks again...also, because I do raise my cheek piece, I am tempted to order the spacers advertised in your signature...I wouldn't be considering them with those low rings!! haha. Is that your company that makes those? I love the idea as I have to remove my cheek piece in order to clean my rifle and having something that would enable a consistent comb height would be great!

I will definitely agree! They don't serve too much of a purpose...they do hold oil a bit better...but they most certainly look better! Thanks for the compliment!

I sent my bolt and Badger knob to Kampfeld and they installed the knob, fluted it, and had it back to me in 3 days. They do great work!

Re: Finally! My First Custom-Built Rifle. PICS!!!

I suspect that if you cerakoted the barrel it would run cooler. The coating would have to be somewhat dark, and not too thick.

Re: Finally! My First Custom-Built Rifle. PICS!!!

That's the exact rifle I want to build. If I had the budget. Only got about 2k to spend. I bet you got alot more than that in it. Great looking stick, I'm jealous.

Re: Finally! My First Custom-Built Rifle. PICS!!!

Nice setup! Are those rings a bit too high though? Looks like you can drop the scope down a bit closer to the bore if you wanted to. I would also dura/ceracote the rifle, including the fluting, but that's my preference. I'm about to do the same thing to my rifle, which is a 40XC in SS.

Re: AICS Custom Build Complete. PICS!!!

I know where you are coming from. When I built that savage I left it uncoated because I liked the contrast bbetween the black action, stainless recoil lug, then the black barrel nut, with the SS barrel. Most people didn't care for it but i liked it. And at the end of the day it comes down to what you want and like.

$2600 without the scope actually. My gunsmith performs very high quality work for a very affordable price. For instance: he blueprinted the action, cut the chamber, cut crowned threaded and installed the barrel, and installed and turned down the muzzle brake for only $365.

This was already covered! haha. There's a method to the madness: I have a high cheek weld and need the higher rings. Read my earlier response to the same comment...I elaborated earlier on why they're so high.
