I posted this over in the bolt action forum but I might get some good feedback here.

Hey guys, I am having some problems with correct feeding in a AICS short action I am trying out.

I have attached some pictures to give you a better understanding of my problem.

It is a 5 round AI mag, but also does the same thing with another short action mag. My rounds are a 6.5X47 Lapua with an overall length of 2.825

The rounds fit into the mags great. Plenty of room left over. Mags are unmodified. It's a rem 700.

Those bullets are 6.5x47 with 130 JLKs at 2.825

I put an AI mag in with say 5 rounds.

I shoot one round and then pull the bolt back to eject my spent case. Try to put another round in the chamber and it is getting stuck under the action feed ramp.

I am not sure why it would do this. The mag seats just fine and it clicks in with a positive click.

It is like something is not lined up right. You can see in one of the pictures that the actual action is sticking out in the mag well area.

Do I need to dremel some of my action away to get it to fee properly??? I hope not.

I see how the bullet tip is getting stuck on the feed ramp. It is after a round is pushed up in the chamber, then the next round is pushed up by the magazine spring. Well this next round is getting the tip of the bullet caught under the angle feed ramp of the action. Frustrating!!!!

Any, some help would be great. Thanks a bunch guys

Jake

This first picture is of the action sitting and hanging over the magwell area. Is this normal???, It happens on both my short actions.

This is the second round being chambered. After I enject the first spent case. This tip of the bullet is getting stuck under the action feed ramp.

This is the bullet after I pushed it down and to the rear of the mag. It then pops up just fine. This is what it should look like under normal circumstances. Round is now ready to be pushed by the bolt into the chamber.

Re: ***AICS feeding problems, please help! Match soon!

it's because you are using aftermarket magazines or aics magazines with the front plate removed that allow longer than standard overall lengths. to use these magazines, the feed ramp needs to be notched about .100". some pretty smart people feel this is not a safe practice though. that said, i've done it and seen plenty of rifles pushed hard with the mod without issues.

edit:

here's the notch i'm talking about.

if your loaded rounds will fit in an unmodified aics magazine, i'd run those and not modify the receiver. if they won't fit, then i guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

They have a plate in the front of them?

That over hang looks a bit much in the underneath view, I've got a high speed hand held 110v plug in mill you can borrow (aka Dremel).

Re: ***AICS feeding problems, please help! Match soon!

do you have a way to measure how much of the feed ramp is hanging over the mag well?

out of curiosity, the recoil lug recess in the stock hasn't been modified, has it?

Re: ***AICS feeding problems, please help! Match soon!

Mag have the plate in front if the bullet tip.

I also have a personal high speed mill. LOL

I don't have a way to measure that action hanging over into the may well but I would guess its roughly 1/8" but not more than 1/4". Just a guess.

Re: ***AICS feeding problems, please help! Match soon!

The Rem 700 has an 1/8" lip that protrudes into the magwell of the AICS (it also does with the Badger DBM). The interior front of the AI mag (with the front plate) pretty much lines up with the edge of the action.

If the plate has been removed from the AI mag or you are using some other mfgr. mag for longer round length, the the action needs to be notched as discussed.

Your round AOL looks too long.
