Anyone know what is a good AICS paint prep?....I understand that paint doesnt really like to stick to these stocks and there is a certain way to prep these for pain. Anyone know?
Thanks

Re: AICS paint prep?....

Sand them with a good amount of aggression, and use acetone and or brakleen to wipe down the surface right before painting. Doing a good base coat is key.

Re: AICS paint prep?....

You're right, paint doesn't stick to the skins of an AICS very well, especially if the rifle gets used for something other than prone or off the bench. In reality, it's no biggie, just pull the skins off and shoot 'em with Krylon again, problem solved.

Re: AICS paint prep?....

I'd disagree with that - if you prep them properly (wash them in dish soap and really hot water, air dry and then degrease), then hit them with Krylon Fusion, allow it to dry and cure as directed between applications and then two or three coats of the cleat matt coat they are fine (unless you spill solvents all over them!).

Re: AICS paint prep?....

After you apply the paint to the skins. Then apply a clear coat to make it more durable. Take some steel wool and dull the finish. This way it is not shinny. This will make you paint have a harder finish.

Clear coat a thin coat.

Auto body supply store. Krylon makes a "adhesion promoter" as well, works good if you cant find Bulldog.

Re: AICS paint prep?....

Thanks Captain Kirk. I don't currently have a stock to paint, but my attempt at painting my barreled action and bottom metal didn't go as well as I had hoped; perhaps I didn't "rough up" the metal surfaces well enough and I think 400 grit sand paper is inadequate. I think I will try 300 grit or rougher for next attempt, but I also think I will stick to Aluma-hyde II for metal and Krylon for the stock.

Will give the adhesion promoter a try when I get the stock. Thanks again.

Don't lay that gun down in TX and walk off, you won't be able to find it again. Nice job.

Re: AICS paint prep?....

I used steel wool and then left it out in the hot sun for a while. I then used a lot of break cleaner, sprayed with fusion. Once it dried I used Krylon on it. When it rubs of hit it again.

Re: AICS paint prep?....

I use PPG plastic adhesion promoter, you can get it at a auto body supply shop. Wipe all surfaces to be painted with acetone or 90% isopropyl alcohol thoroughly. Use a few coats of the ppg stuff, then paint. Letting it dry in the sun or under a heat lamp helps.
