AICS to fold or not to fold?

I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase of the 2.0 stock over the 1.5. The only diference between the two that I am conscious of is the ability of the 2.0 to fold the rear of the stock.

Someone please sell me on this concept.

To search or not to search...that is THE question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer repeated posts on the same question over and over again or to just do a quick search on a topic that has been covered as recently as last month!

I personally recommend the Stage 2.0 Chassis for the reasons discussed in that thread. Makes life a lot easier!!

I have two AIAWs and an AICS 1.5. None of them are folding stocks. Again, different strokes for different folks. Some will tell you it's convenient to not have to take the adjustable cheek piece off to clean. It doesn't bother me a bit. Both are very sturdy. Have not heard any folding stock problem. So it boils down to what you want and how deep your pocket is. I believe the price difference is substantial enough that you can buy a decent supply of reloading stuff. Just my opinion.

Mine is a folder, saves space in certain situations, and easier to clean without removing the cheek piece. Now, I don't clean often, so it really only saves about 2 minutes of time removing the 2 screws. DesertHK said it the best, its really a personal preference thing.

If you are having a hard time justifying it don't bother.

Pros as I see them:
-portability
-ease of cleaning
-resale value

Cons:
-none of the pro's are important enough to me to drop the extra coin

Yes, this is pretty much it. The folding not only makes it shorter for in bags/rifle cases but also if you throw it over your shoulder and have to hoof it somewhere. Another really handy feature of the folding stock is the ability to remove the bolt w/o having to adjust your cheek rest. You can set it where it works best for you and if you need to remove the bolt for whatever reason you don't have to worry about setting that again. That's probably the most useful reason to have one and it matters how much those are worth to you as price is all relative.

I have the folder and am very happy about it. Portability has already been mentioned. However portability in the field is great: remove can, fold stock, and carry African. This is very nice.

I can't see buying an AI w/o the folder. You will be happy either way, but you will be happier with the folder.

I have two AICS stock a LA and a SA...Both stocks are 1.5's. It does not take more than a few seconds to loosen two screws and pull the cheek piece. My rifle's are usually carried in a drag bag so portability is not an issue for me.

According to the catalog, yes. In reality it removes 8" <span style="text-decoration: underline">plus</span> whatever spacers one might have. On the gun in your photo it would remove a little over 9".

9+in. is True, if one measures at the hinge assembly to the butt.

When I measured the OAL difference, this was from the muzzle to the longest part in the plane perpandicular to the barrel.

When folded this happened to be the lowest part of thumbhole.

41.5in.operational length- 33.5in. folded = 8in.

Plus this was done with a tape measure, not a venier.

all the number slinging is academic because, it's just damn nice either way.

Yes and you can also mark where the cheek piece is set at so you won't loose that perfect cheekweld.

I measured my 20" AI AW from the bottom of the grip and the reduction was 10" with 2" worth of spacers plus the decel pad.

But, you're right... it's purely academic. I just like numbers.

I went with a 1.5 as well... I like the folder, but I don't like it $200 more than the non-folder.

I thought about it for a while before purchasing as well, and I just couldn't justify an extra $200 for ease of cleaning and portability, when those things aren't a concern of mine.

For those that go 1.5:
I take a little 1/4 ID fuel hose from NAPA and cut spacers to slide on the cheekpiece's posts so it goes back to the desired height every time.......just a tip.

I'd only go with a folder if you are getting a shorty barrel (sub-20") or if you're definitely going to be carrying the rifle in a pack. Both of those scenarios make the best use out of the folder. If you're shooting a 26" 6.5L and only taking it to and from the range, save the cash for reloading supplies.

I was in your same position when deciding on my AI. I sucked it up and went with the 2.0 folder and will not look back. I like the option of folding the stock and stowing it in the safe to save some space. It is a nice feature that you will like in the long run.

I have owned both and wonder why I ever wanted either one. Just did not like them. The 2.0 will come closer to getting your money back, IMO.
