ok so just like the title set im looking for a new project and have been looking at pimpin out an ak but it seems dumb to pay 500+ for a decent ak already built when im just going to change the furniture, sights, mag extension, and flash compensator. so ive been looking at getting an ak build kit online and buying a 1mm stamped reciever and then just build it myself for less than four hundred for everything including accessories, plus it gives me a project. so has anyone ever done one of these and any suggestions or advice?

and just because i know someone is going to ask this is just for range use and a fun project, not for serious competition or protection.

Re: ak 47 kit ???

Buy an RPK receiver (1.5mm thick?), or a machined receiver from ATM (about time machining)

Building is plenty of fun, but make sure you have a local asset who can help install rivets and set the trunnions

Re: ak 47 kit ???

The investment in tooling to build one AK isn't worth it. If you're going to build, five or more, maybe. If the kit you purchase is for a standard stamped receiver you need a 1mm receiver. the guys at www.nodakspud.com make the best US-made stamped receivers available.

Re: ak 47 kit ???

no thanks on the wasr id really like to have a better quality ak i mean isnt that the point in have an ak....

thanks green for the link im still reviever shopping and have decided to definitely go with a stamped 1mm reciever

the big problem im having is not only locating rivets but figuring out which method to use to install them. i could go to HF and buy a shop press and pray i use it again, there are alot of guys shaping bolt cutter mouths to use as a press and they all seem to think this is a great method. ive been contemplating trying to use a hydraulic car jack. any suggestions??

Re: ak 47 kit ???

The only time you should buy an RPK receiver is if you have an RPK kit. Standard trunnions will not fit in an RPK receiver. They lack the bulged sides. Find your kit then buy a receiver from NODAK SPUD. If you don't have a lot of the necessary tools the easiest is a screw build. It is not as traditional as rivets but it is easy for someone that does not have the necessary tools to install the rivets. The hardest thing will be pressing the barrel out of the front trunnion.
