AK-74 How makes a good one?

Re: AK-74 How makes a good one?

I always looked at the MP15 upper for them. it's a familiar platform, and dirt cheap ammo

I don't know if they still make them though?

...and too actually address your question. Top of the line would be an Arsenal. There are several makers of AK-74s out there in the $400-$750 range. Atlantic Firearms (online) would be a good place to start. An Arsenal Saiga in 5.45x39 will run in the low $800s. The M&P upper is nice but running the current 7N ammo through it will make it a chore to clean and maintain. It's dirty and corrosive all of which is bad for the AR DI system. A classic AK in the new Russian round is a nice platform and at 1,280 rounds for $140 it's not a bad gun to own.

IF cheap ammo is the only reason you're looking go for the IAC on Atlantic's site. They've been getting good reports for bang for the buck for quite a while. It'll save you a few hundred over a K-var Saiga which are nice.

Re: AK-74 How makes a good one?

+1 for arsenal. i do however have a problem sinking anything over $600 into an ak platform. i just really hate that style of rifle (just my own opinion) and really had to push the "its worth it in the long run" idea through my head. Glad i did, but i still sometimes wonder if the cheaper ones would have suited me just the same. The Saigas are dirt cheap (as long as you don't need a pistol grip or the classic ak stock) and have been reported to be amazing rifles.
