I'm planning on getting a .270 Weatherby Magnum barrel made for the DTA SRS I will be ordering in a couple months. I'll be using the .270 to hunt all that Alaska has to offer and to my thinking it will work well from that 50 yard moose shot to the 400-600 yard caribou/Dall sheep shot. Using the SRS I can keep my overall length way down and still use a 24" tube. I'm thinking a 1 in 10" twist and shooting bullets in the 140gr range, Partions for large game and ballistics tips or TTSX's for the medium to small game (caribou is what I consider medium game). This rifle will also be used on Kodiak grizzlies if I don't have my .375 H&H on hand. That or I will load hunting bullets into the .338 LM for use with bear or long range moose hunts. I don't mind the weight of the rifle cause right now I'm hunting with my 14lbs .308. As for a scope to top it I'm going to go with the Schmidt and Bender I want to get for the .338 LM barrel. I think the low end magnification is 5x, I'd have to check though. Am I missing anything?

As always thanks for the information.

I think there are no responses to your post because we are scratching our heads trying to understand why you chose 270WM.

There's nothing wrong with the cartridge but you are only shooting once or twice at the trophy.338L's don't recoil that much.

Why not use the 338L for hunting caribou, moose, grizzly?

Re: All purpose rifle build, suggestions?

Because for the most part even a .338 Winchester Magnum is overkill for caribou and moose, grizzle I would prefer to not take chances, hence my .375. I was orginally thinking the .300WM would work but the .270 Weatherby is a laser and I don't think it'll do as mch damage to Dall sheep or caribou. Another factor is that factory ammunition would be available in a pinch. Am I overestimating what a .300WM will do a 90lbs animal or am I right on track on going with the smaller caliber?

Re: All purpose rifle build, suggestions?

I'm just spouting off here so just ignore me if you want.

If you shoot any big game species with a double lung shot with a 338L your OK as far as meat damage, yes.

Nice thing about the 338L is you can shoot your grizzly from 1/2 a mile and don't have to worry about him running over and tenderizing you,LOL.

Yep... with a 338L make sure you remember your ammo!

My advice...buy a good laser range finder,a steel target and practice at different distances and angles.

Re: All purpose rifle build, suggestions?

From my experience on whitetails a 300WM will not do any more damage to a 90lb animal than a .308 will. A 300 WM will however push further into a larger animal, all other things being equal. It is a far more powerful round, but a game bullet that holds together will punch a .30 caliber hole in and about double that size coming out on a whitetail,it doesn't matter if that bullet was started by a 30/30 or a 30/378.

That same cartridge choice would make a HUGE difference on a larger animal. The 30/30 might not have the horsepower to bust heavy bones or shoot through 10" of fat to get to the vitals. the 30/378 would.

I would consider the .270 a great medium game caliber, and damn close to criminal and suicidal on a game animal perfectly capable of eating you. My opinion only.... TJR

Re: All purpose rifle build, suggestions?

Thanks for the information guys, geuss I'll just order the .300 WM barrel along with the .308 and .338LM. I was afraid the bullet would carry too much energy into the sheep and make it look like a grenade went off inside of it.
