I am a novice reloader. My only experience has been reloading a bit of .223.

I recently got some dies and wanted to start working up a load for my pre-64 Winchester 30/06 (bought 1956).

Due to the shortage of components, I'm pretty much limited to whatever I can find on the store shelves. I bought some Speer 180 grain BTSP, intending on building a load based on the data in my Speer book, but I can't for the life of me find any powder listed for this particular bullet.

So, I happened upon some 4000-MR. It says on the bottle that it's for magnum rifles, but I googled it while I was in the store and quickly found a few sources that had used it for the 30/06. And, not knowing when I would have another chance to buy powder (this is all I've seen all year), I grabbed it.

When I got home, I checked my Speer manual; no data there. So I went to Alliant's website and found 2 recipes: http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/powderlistprint.aspx?page=%2freloaders%2fpowderlist.aspx&type=1&powderid=33&cartridge=81

Great! It's got a recipe for the 180 grain Speer TBBC, so I thought I could just use the same data for the BTSP. But when I got home and looked in my manual, Speer specifically says to only use TBBC data for TBBC bullets, because they don't behave the same as other conventional bullets.

So naturally, I'm a bit frustrated.

Do you guys have any data on this powder/bullet combination for the '06? I emailed Alliant and asked them, but haven't received a reply yet. Are there similar powders that I can compare it to?

I'm gonna fire off an email to Speer also, and see what they say about it.

Thanks

zacii,

It would really be nice if you send Alliant this thread and ask them to release data for QuickLoad users. I'd love to try this with heavier bullets/loads in a .30-06, but have no way to figure out starting loads. Alliant pushes data for their own bullets, but not many others. Never received any replies to RFIs, either.

Good luck,
DocB

No need to email anybody, I use 57grs 4000MR with 180 Sierras and Hornadys, Rem brass, any primer will work., I dont use magnum primers. The powder just flat works in my 06. This target was shot at 300yds, shot a similar group with the 180 SBTs.

This is great info.

Do you have a recommended starting point? Alliant's website shows 57 grains over a Speer 180 TBBC, I was just going to go with that, but I'm a little apprehensive just jumping into it due to my inexperience.

I received a reply from Alliant regarding whether or not I could substitute a BTSP instead of the TBBC shown on their website:

I think it would be okay but the listed load is max. It should be reduced by 10% for a starting load. Thanks for your note.

I'm gonna roll with it, as soon as I get an optic for my '06.

I just loaded up 57grs the first time and everything was fine, you can work up if you like, maybe start at 55grs, that should be fine. You really dont need to reduce 10%, 5% is plenty good.

I've been waiting for this powder to show up in my area, and am REALLY curious what it can do. I've been blown away by it's younger sibling, Power Pro 2000mr in my .308. I was hoping to find a pet load with it in .300wm , or .338LM. I will be watching this thread.
