Gunsmithing Alternative to having my barrel threaded?

I have an old surplus rifle that has had the barrel cut to 18".I would like to have an AK74 style brake attached to the muzzle for added crown protection, and cosmetic purposes. I do not require that it be removable afterwards. I have tried numerous local gunsmiths and none of which have been able to thread the barrel to the appropriate pattern. I cannot afford to dump the money into sending this thing off to have it properly threaded so I have been toying with the idea of just welding the brake to the barrel permanently. Would this work or is there some magical reason that it has to be threaded?

Re: Alternative to having my barrel threaded?

Its a Mosin Nagant 91/30. And the thread pattern on the muzzle brake is 14x1 LH. The diameter of the barrel is too large to thread with a die. I would have to have someone turn it down to the proper diameter using a lathe which is going to still cost more than the rifle is worth.

Re: Alternative to having my barrel threaded?

The bore of the barrel needs to line up with the exit hole on your brake so that it doesn't hit the side of the brake. If it doesn't line up you may get some unwanted excitement. Proceed with caution if you are not going to get someone who knows what they are doing.
