I got a hold of a few military ammo cans from my friend who works in ordnance down at our base and the cans are a little rusty. So I'm thinking of makeing a little project out of them and sanding then re spray painting them and try a few new color concepts. I want to stay accurate and was wondering what the labeling means on the sides and tops of the cans.. How to read them and how I can properly label them when I relabel them.. He's also getting me the stencils they use for labelng them.. Just need to know how to do it right.

I know one is the caliber.. Round/ shell count.. And if it's linked.. And also if any are tracers but other than that I have no clue how to read it. So if anyone knows how the labels are set up and how to read them if you could help me out.

Re: Ammo can labels.

100 cartridges .50 caliber
cartridges are linked with m9 model links
4 rounds will be m33 ball (the type of ammo )
1 round will be a tracer m17 (meaning 4 ball then 1 tracer then 4 ball alternating )
LC means Lake City ( ammo plant where it was made) the numbers/letters identify the ammo lot

Re: Ammo can labels.

Alright thanks.

What would I put for un linked 7.62x51 or .308 168g bullets.

How would that label look?

Re: Ammo can labels.

mine also have a little picture that looks like a single shell with a link for the .50 and i have a few with 10 dots that indicate ammo on stripper clips in 5.56

another 50 is labeled

85 cartidges
50 cal
linked m15a2
1 tracer m17-4 api m8

if you need pics, let me know
func lot pod83l006l020
tracer m17 lot lc blah blah
api m8 lot lc blah blah

Re: Ammo can labels.

Anyone know of what kind of paint I should use. I want somthing that will last but nothing like dura coat or anything extreme and expencive just somthing that will hold up and stick on to the can metal for a little while.

Re: Ammo can labels.

yellow krylon first choice, but my cheap azz would go to the dollar store first. actually my cheap azz uses a sharpie and just writes 308, 223, or 45 on the handle or on the latch. in my room they all face out and i dont see the sides. hard to say if the original is sprayed on or brushed over the stencil, but the lack of over spray on the stripper clip illustration (the 10 dots) says brush to me
