Hope this is in the right place. I have run out of room for both my ammo and guns in the safe. I have large quanities of certain ammo I want to get out of the safe and pack in surplus ammo cans. I want to leave the ammo in the factory boxes pack the can, throw in a desiccant pack, shut the lid and forget about it. Is this a correct way to do this? I really want a new safe for my guns and use the one I have now for ammo but just don't have the funds right now. Thanks.

Re: ammo storage

Yes that will work. Have you thought about getting a closet somewhere in your reloading/gun safe room and just buying some cheap ass plastic shelves from Wally World and stacking them on those?

Re: ammo storage

Only problem with putting shelves in the closet is the safe is in the bedroom closet and I'm married, so I have no closet space. I have a small workshop in the basement where I do my gunwork/reloading and also hide from the wife and kids. The room isn't climate controlled yet so I really don't want to store it down there plus I like having my ammo close at hand.

It's in your basement, not a whole lot of large and quick temperature variation.

I have ammo in several places in my home & property. In the house, in two different barns and in a shop. Outside the house they get warm in the summer and cold in the winter. They're kept where they don't get wet or could collect moisture, which is your main concern.

I'll add in over 20+ years I've never had a problem.
