dont know to much about projectile flight and rate of twist,,

can someone help with this

i have a sps tac .308 i beleave the rate is 1-12 and from some reading see that the heavy bullets run better ? and lighter loads for the 1-10

if this is corect can i get a simple explination

thanks

Re: ammo ?

well thanks for that direction , but i did seach and have been searching for all info i can get

i like the 168, that is what i ran in my 700p but was looking to buy some surplus ammo for targets,, and most i find are NATO and are 147gr , what i see is the 1-12 is best 150 up to about 170 give or take,, so

question will the 1-12 sling a 147g fmj ?

Re: ammo ?

Well, some really question the reasoning for using surplus ammo in a precision rifle.

However, these is some nice 7.62NATO surplus out there. Not match by any means. I printed a 1.5" group through my SPS tac using 147gr Portugeus surplus. I didn't do my best at the time as I was in a race with daylight, but I am sure it is capable of around 1 MOA, which for the price you just can't beat.

Re: ammo ?

the price it about it , would be for plinking 300m or so i only shoot out to 600m anyhow ,, but price is about it ,, if i want to do any precision shooting i just buy a couple box of 168g amax or the new zmax

and from what i read the germin surplus is good ammo for the price and some go as far as saying they are accurate to a point and better than the premuvara

1-10 means faster, = heavy bullets 175, 180, 190, 200, etc etc
1-12 is slower, = 147, 155, 168, 175, or whatever you can get to shoot through it accurately.
As for the German surplus, have read mixed reviews, most are favourably though.

Re: ammo ?

If you are starting out, I would recommend buying reasonably priced ammo, and find out exactly how small of a group you, and your gear can shoot that ammo. Then practice until you can shoot almost the same sized group from a field position as you used to shoot from a bench.

Then it will be worth getting ammo that is more expensive, and shoots better. Repeat the same exercise as above with each batch of better shooting ammo.

Once you and your rifle can shoot as well as the rifle, ammo, and gear is mechanically capable of shooting, then it might be worth looking into improving your gear. But, if your rifle shoots half minute, I gotta wonder if you want to be a bench rest shooter, or a true field shooter.

I am far more impressed with a field shooter who pounds out inch groups at 100 yards all the time using just a sling, than I am by a bench rest shooter who shoots a quarter inch group only under perfect conditions.

The A-Max and Z-Max are the same thing. If you're shooting beyond 600yds, the 175gr Sierra Match King would better suit your needs.
