The IRS seizes assets worth far more than they are owed and keeps the profit when they sell them to their connected friends at banks and land development companies. If you pay me for services, I pick that up as taxable income. Now I go buy groceries, clothes, ammo, whatever. I don't get to deduct those expenses, but the grocery store/gun shop/retailer still picks that up as taxable income and the process repeats. Every dollar in existence has been taxed countless times.
So.... why the hell do I get taxed out the ass on the income I earn, but someone that inherits a bunch of "free" money doesn't pay jack shit? On top of that, stepped up basis allows the beneficiary to pay ZERO tax on any appreciated assets upon their sale- in other words, neither they (the beneficiary) nor the deceased ever paid any taxes on that appreciation on all the investments the beneficiary cashes out on.
Frankly, it just doesn't make sense. I don't believe we should have an income tax OR property taxes at all, but the logic behind our system of taxation is ass backwards and people get way too upset when politicians suggest eliminating stepped up basis or lowing the lifetime exclusion when there are MUCH bigger issues at play.

Nobody seemed to call him out on the fact that he had carefully moved ALL his wealth into trusts and corporations so the government would never get any on his death. Nor did anyone bother to bring up that he made his ill gotten wealth by finding less wealthy folks such as farmers and business owners who were "property rich" but cash poor and when they died the government came a demanding taxes from stuff with little immediate liquid value, so he could waltz in and scoop up the stuff at rock bottom prices so he could get his, the government could get theirs and the heirs were left with nothing and yet another farm or business became the property of the mega rich elite..
STOP letting the government manipulate you with hate, envy and greed into giving them more power.
It is taxed. It's just that you have to know the loopholes. But inheritance tax is like a private transaction tax . If you give your buddy $20, govt doesn't tax that.
And I would politely point out that the person who earned it can do what they want. Life isn't fair. Don't be jealous of others. Go get your own hunk of paradise and enjoy. The deceased paid tax before he invested it. The beneficiary never had it until someone died.

Yeah I always voted against that shit. I never understood how it’s ok for non property owners to vote on other people’s property rights and that’s coming from a renter. I also know that shit rolls downhill, so any rise in property tax will be paid by me.

I'm opposed to both income and property taxes. I thought I made that clear. The socialist bullshit is out of line. I don't support estate tax either... my point was to show that estate taxes are the least of our concern given the current tax code in the US. If I were the HMFIC, we'd move towards minimal taxation through a consumption based (i.e., sales tax) model to support a miniscule federal government that would essentially support the military and not much else.
I'm also a CPA in private practice for the better part of 20 years. I'm the motherfucker that helps the wealthy to manipulate the tax code to preserve their multigenerational wealth. Just this past year, I helped an individual that inherited a fuckin' railroad to not only not pay any taxes, but receive a refund of around $8500 through child tax credits and the earned income tax credit. He bought a damned Lamborghini in the same year.
The key takeaway here is that you're subject to taxation on everything you earn, but not what you receive for "free." IMO, that's ridiculous. That's all I was getting at. I'm going to respectfully bow out of this thread. Everyone has an opinion, even if they have no idea of how all the moving parts come together.
