Annealing issue

Hello all,

I have the ugly annealer, which does the job. However, sometimes the torch tip spits and drips fluid, runs an orange flame, then goes out. It’s very annoying that I can’t get a batch of brass done without this happening. I’ve replaced the tip 4 times and thought I had it working with this one. I run a hose from the camping propane tank to the mounted pencil tip. Does anyone know what’s causing this and how to stop it? I usually can’t get it to relight correctly after it goes out. I can hear propane in the bottle when I shake it (gently) so I don’t think it’s out of gas. Any help is appreciated!

Where's the tank in relationship to the torch head?

Sounds like you might have the tank sitting on the counter along with your Ugly??? The tank should be sitting well below the torch head.

I did that on my camp stove, Tanks was too high. Eventually froze the line

I did not know the tank needed to be below the burner. I appreciate that advice! I will try that!!

Curious as to why the tanks need to be below the burner? I have mine on the side of the burner on the table standing straight up.

I run mine on the table alongside the Ugly and never had an issue. It is sitting upright.

It's liquefied gas - I suppose this is analogous to "flooding the engine."

It's a 1 lb tank?

I have my 1 lb tank sitting next to my Annealeez and it works fine too. The there's not enough difference in the level of liquid propane in the tank to be above my torch head where the liquid will siphon off. You simply have to make sure the liquid doesn't siphon into the torch heaad.

If he's got a 20 powder next to his Ugly, then it could easily siphon off given the level of propane can be high enough for that. When he says his tank is a "camping propane tank", I envision a 20 pounder???

If the 1 lb tank is sitting upright next to your Ugly, then there shouldn't be any issue with the liquid propane flowing into your torch head. . . .

. . . unless at some point the tank was laying on it side at some time when the hose connected where the liquid ran into the line. With the line disconnected, make sure the line has no liquid in it and then reconnect the line with the tank staying in a vertical position.

Do you have a loop in your hose? A loop sitting vertically can allow liquid propane to gather in the low spot of the hose.
