Another 260 reamer question

The search function has revealed much, but I'm curious about factory ammo compatability if one is inclined to use a reamer set up for the heavier match bullets. I know that many promote the 0.10" leade for being able to run tangent ogives and staying in mag box confines, yet some go even shorter to run the VLD's and jam lands.

Not having many components to assemble for comparison, will a 0.10" throat make a 260 Match chamber too short for typical factory ammo? Not talking BH or Cor-Bon Scenars here, but Accu-tips, Ballistic Tips, Gamekings, and other factory load offerings. It will likely make little difference to me, as I handload the majority of my rifle ammo, but I'm thinking on down the road when I'm gone and my kids or grandkids may not handload.

FWIW, my 260 700 Mtn Rifle will hit lands with Accubonds at 2.82" and this looks to indicate a throat of 0.20" or so. That would mean that a 0.10" throat would require a seating depth of 2.72" or so with that bullet. I dunno how that compares to most factory ammo, but the AB is fairly "pointy" for a hunting bullet. Something more blunt, like a Gameking or Partition would require an even shorter OAL. Magazine/throating harmony weighs heavily on my list of concerns for this 6.5mm built that I'm doing.

Monkeying with all these numbers gives a bit of insight regarding the 260 vs 6.5Creemore vs 6.5x47Lapua argument and definetly strengthens the nod toward a 2.9"+ mag box or DBM if a guy wants a do-it-all 260.

Re: Another 260 reamer question

Probably the best advice anyone can give when you have questions about reamers is to call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge tell him what you want and then order what he recommends.

Re: Another 260 reamer question

From anothe post;

I have three 260 reamers. All have .295" necks but the free bore is different. The .100" free bore reamer is one of my all time favorite reamers and it came from PTG. Dave has the print to it on file. Call and order the .100" free bore Louisiana Precision 260 Reamer. You'll really like it.

Free bore for my 260 reamers are as follows;

.060" (PTG)
.090" (JGS)
.100" (PTG)

The .090" and .100" are same/same. If using VLDs, they will need to be run in either an AW magazine or a modified AI magazine.

For the 139 Scenars, either reamer will work great and you can feed from a standard AI magazine and touch the lands.

Best I can tell, the VLDs need a reamer with about .040" free bore in order to touch the lands and feed from an AI. This is one reason why I changed my signature receiver to have the AW magazine cut over the standard cut and to run the AW magazines with it. Any reamer with .080" to .100" free bore will work great for you. If feeding from an AW magazine you'll be able to run Tangent or Secant ogive bullets and hit the lands with either. It's a win/win.

Re: Another 260 reamer question

My searching turned up more than one post of yours regarding the 260 and I value your opinion.

To play devil's advocate here, say a guy also hunts with his 260 and is seperated somehow from his handloads. Will the 0.10" throat leave him in a tight spot (pun intended) if he tries to run factory ammo like Federal's Nosler BT or Remington's Accu-Tip? Just trying to weigh out the pros and cons, so questions are cheap insurance. With all the 260's on this board I would imagine that somebody has run into this scenario. I know each bullet/OAL is a creature unto itself, but I was wondering how short you can get on the throat before you start to really limit yourself to handloads and a certain few match-style factory offerings.
