Whats better than having a GAP rifle show up on your step? Having two show up!! I finished the load workups on my Crusader .260 so I could start this lightweight .260 a few days ago. 123gr scenars clocked 2990fps with 44.0grs of H4350 without any pressure sign.

I have a 10X42 S&B PMII on order for this one but just couldnt wait any longer and robbed the same scope from my R700 GAP .308 to get this project underway.

Specs:
Templar action
Rock barrel #3 contour 1-9" 24"
Pillar bedded
GAP recoil lug
Mcmillan "Hunters Edge" stock
Badger M5 bottom metal
Jewell trigger @ 16oz
Talley LW 30MM rings
Cerro Coat black
Finished weight is 7lbs, 14oz with scope and 5 in the mag.

Re: Another GAP....

Looks like another great hunting rig, my friend. I'm looking forward to seeing some results from it! Really interested to see how the 6.5 Scenars do.

Well if that isn't a loaded question, I don't know what is!

Everyone at GAP works extremely hard and are busy for many hours each day not only building, but taking orders for rifles and everything that goes along with such a business. It may be hard to get hold of someone at a specific instant, but I guarantee if you shoot Ken Lin a direct e-mail, he will get back to you:

I'm sure you'll get a barrage of responses to your post. You'll be cast out into the shadows for saying anything even remotely negative about the "Oh Holy GAP" organization. I'm sure they are busy, but I can't imagine they would turn you away like that. I wish more people would realize that there are other smiths that can build a equally nice rifle other than GAP. I have nothing bad to say about them in terms of their work, they build a nice rifle, BUT so do numerous other smiths. If you took 4 rifles laid out side by side from 4 different smiths (with no stamps/labels on them), you would not be able to see a differnce in craftsmanship from a GAP, to a Beanland, to a Bettin Custom, to a APA.

Re: Another GAP....

Prolly the best thing anyone can do when dealing with ANY 'smith is to have your shit together before you call. As in, have ALL your questions & concerns at the ready when you make your call. I realize that we spend big bucks on custom builds and some guys may need some extra lip service to justify it. However, when you are calling a big name builder like GAP, you have to realize that they are busy for a reason! So, help THEM to help YOU
wink.gif
Reach out & make contact. When someone responds, you've already got your shit together, so you'll be just hashing out the details of your next step...

This is what I did for my two GAP rifles:

1. Get all my parts together for the build. Barrel, action, trigger, bottom metal & stock.

2 Ship them out, Priority Insured mail w/Deilvery confirmation. Along with parts, I include a detailed letter explaining exactly how I want my rifle built (the people that talk on the phone usually ain't the ones building the rifles). At the end of the letter, I include my cell phone # in the event that the builder has any questions or concerns about my rifle.

3. When my parts are received, Tracy in the office calls me for CC info to put on file.

4. Tracy calls again to tell me that my rifle is done & am notified of the charges going on my card. (Both times, the builds were completed earlier than expected)

4. Receive GAP rifle & shoot the crap out of it...

That's about it. I know GAP's reputation & wanted them to build those two sticks in particular. I have other rifles built by well known & respected smiths, but I wanted GAP to build those two. Knowing that GAP 'smith work is in high demand, I intentionally streamlined the process & made it as easy as possible for them to finish my rifle exactly how I wanted it...

Some guys may enjoy the process of being on a more personal level with their 'smith. That IS a nice bonus, and I've had rifles built by 'smiths who I could call & BS with on the phone. I just figured that the GAP guys are too busy building badazz rifles to be wasting time BS-ing me on the phone about mine. So I let 'em do their thing & enjoy the end product...

Spoke to Ken on the morning of Friday 11/25, I called 20 min later with a question and to let him know I located a barrel (since they did not have what I wanted in stock for my build), NO answer, so I left a message... NO response... Sent an email 11/25 6:30pm (their time).... NO response... Called this morning (11/28/2011) approx 930am (their time)..... Left a message...NO response.... called periodicity throughout the day and was automatically directed to voicemail each time I called... Sent a PM to George here on the hide, NO RESPONSE....I finally got through (via telephone) to a female whom instructed me to SEND MY ROCK BARREL elsewhere after I explained what I have been going through since Friday. I understand they are busy and "ken gets 60 calls a day" but I have an interest in having my mike rock gun plumbered into a surgeon action, a jewell trigger, FTE brake, bedded in my McMillan A-5, and cerakoted. I guess they are to the point in their business where they don't need MY business. ------- I have to say, I was referred to accurateordnance.com and I spent some time on the phone with Mark. I felt as if I was talking with a long time friend and I am extremely confident in my decision. I am looking forward to doing business with them and can't wait to get this project going. Thank you accurateordnance!

Being that we just came off a holiday weekend where we were closed Thursday and Friday Ken and Tracey have been on the phone non stop all day lang, Its 7:00 PM here and Ken is still at the shop calling people. If you can wait till tomorro, I guarantee Ken will call you back, If your the type of customer that expects to be called back in 10 min , its not possibe for us to do that all of the time and I dont think you will find anyone that can promise that either. We do our best and thats all Myself or anyone else can ask.

I agree with Trevor there are alot of good smiths out there, Nobody from GAP would ever say otherwise.

But Trevor, instead of being irritated by the many guys speaking about GAP consider this, We built 1700 rifles last year, Thats more than probably all the other shops on here combined. Becouse of that there are alot more people to that are proud to talk about their rifles. Its nothing more than that. Im glad they are all happy customers and that they are happy with the service they recieved.

I just got back from a Hunt with Pat, He had this rifle with him and I could instantly tell this baby has seen some serious action in the last year. He's got a 130 Berger load that shoots in the 2-3 inch area at 800 Yards, No telling what kind of damage this rifle has done to the critters in Montana!!!!!

Trevor, let me respond to your post as one of the biggest GAP whores here on the board. There are MANY smiths here who put out a good, quality rifle. Many rifles I would be more than happy to shoot. But let's look beyond the rifle quality itself for a moment. Are the smiths at matches? Do the smiths put up rifles for prizes? What are the smiths doing to support the sport besides building rifles? It's not a knock on other smiths by any means but look what George et al does for this sport. I have seen (as have many others) GAP put up 10's of thousands of dollars worth of rifles for prizes. I've seen many of the GAP smiths AT matches. I've seen many of the GAP smiths fix broken rifles AT matches. That one hell of a way to step up. He can do that, some smiths cant. I get it. But what you need to realize is the GAP "fanboy" attitude you allude to is more than just a great stick.

That's a fair reply and I see your point in regards to the support of the sport outside the shop.

This was necessary in order to get the ball rolling on my project since I located a barrel and I needed suggestion on choosing between their templar action or a surgeon action instead of truing my remington 700 action. I honestly don't care if I'm cast out into the shadows because I publicly made word of the poor service I received from a belligerent customer service woman after finally getting someone on the phone. Business is business, MY MONEY IS GREEN! I' sure George isn't going to appreciate almost $3K of business being turned away, I know I wouldn't be. Wait a minute.. my phone is ringing @ 8:38pm I just got off the phone with ken and I have to say I may consider GAP in the future. As for now this build is going to Accurateordnance.

Thats uncalled for bud.

Re: Another GAP....

So you called GAP on a Friday during Thanksgiving weekend, as a "first timer" custom build, and was able to speak to Ken on the first try. After not getting exactly what you wanted, you proceeded to call and email hourly until you got somebody on the phone, and are somehow surprised the lady who answered got short with you.

I've spoken with Ken several times, and it's sometimes taken him a day to call back. Big deal. Given that GAP is dealing with ~10 month lead-times, I don't consider that a few hours will make much a difference.

A bit of advice: if it's your first endeavor at anything that involves large amounts of time and money, do your research and patiently talk to people who know. It may take a couple of days, but getting hostile and demanding immediate answers because "your money is green" will benefit no one.

Re: Another GAP....

You sound like the guy that can't be please and wants to come cry in someone else's thread about the horrible service at GAP. oh wait.....

I have been to their shop. Every person that works in that building is as nice as you can expect. Everyone of them showed us around the shop, what they were working on and why they were doing it that way. George and crew are top rate.

I think your posts are in poor taste.... I doubt Tracey could be "hostile" unless you were being flat our rude or impossible to deal with, and from your posts I can see why.

Re: Another GAP....

Sweet rifle, Pat. That thing is WICKED!

May I ask what kind of targets you're using? I like the layout.

Cheers,

Eric

PS - I have a rifle on order and have received nothing but great customer service from GAP.
