Re: Another GAP....
Prolly the best thing anyone can do when dealing with ANY 'smith is to have your shit together before you call. As in, have ALL your questions & concerns at the ready when you make your call. I realize that we spend big bucks on custom builds and some guys may need some extra lip service to justify it. However, when you are calling a big name builder like GAP, you have to realize that they are busy for a reason! So, help THEM to help YOU
Reach out & make contact. When someone responds, you've already got your shit together, so you'll be just hashing out the details of your next step...
This is what I did for my two GAP rifles:
1. Get all my parts together for the build. Barrel, action, trigger, bottom metal & stock.
2 Ship them out, Priority Insured mail w/Deilvery confirmation. Along with parts, I include a detailed letter explaining exactly how I want my rifle built (the people that talk on the phone usually ain't the ones building the rifles). At the end of the letter, I include my cell phone # in the event that the builder has any questions or concerns about my rifle.
3. When my parts are received, Tracy in the office calls me for CC info to put on file.
4. Tracy calls again to tell me that my rifle is done & am notified of the charges going on my card. (Both times, the builds were completed earlier than expected)
4. Receive GAP rifle & shoot the crap out of it...
That's about it. I know GAP's reputation & wanted them to build those two sticks in particular. I have other rifles built by well known & respected smiths, but I wanted GAP to build those two. Knowing that GAP 'smith work is in high demand, I intentionally streamlined the process & made it as easy as possible for them to finish my rifle exactly how I wanted it...
Some guys may enjoy the process of being on a more personal level with their 'smith. That IS a nice bonus, and I've had rifles built by 'smiths who I could call & BS with on the phone. I just figured that the GAP guys are too busy building badazz rifles to be wasting time BS-ing me on the phone about mine. So I let 'em do their thing & enjoy the end product...
