The first Grandpa's memory box thread was great and there were some really nice things. I thought I'd post here and also try to get some feedback on these items.
My Grandfather was a WWI inductie and served in Pensacola, FL at the close of WWI. He was a farm kid from western Iowa and a pretty good boxer in the day. He served in the Navy and was training/working on aircraft and boxing for the Navy as the family story goes. I did some research and found out that the Navy did have aviation operations there starting in 1913. We have his WWI Victory Medal and about 30 years ago, I gave his Navy Seaman's Dress Blues to his hometown historical society in western Iowa where they remain today. I kept the two pennants shown in the attached images and they survived about 40 years of storage, moves, and some adolescent years, and 5 years at college. I have begun looking for a place where they can be shown and wasn't sure if there is a place somewhere in the Navy where they can be displayed for others to enjoy. Unfortunately the nieces and nephews lack the interest in keeping them. It's time to find another steward for them.
I was told as a little kid that Grandpa got them when he left the Navy and brought them back to Iowa. They hung in the farmhouse and we were told "do not touch ever," When he passed in 1978, they were given to me while I was still in HS. They would be closing in on 100 years old and are in excellent condition. I do not know the ship name or if it can even be identified.
If anyone can shed light or offer and ideas, I'd like to hear them.
Enjoy.
