Hunting & Fishing Another pack thread...

Hey guys before I start I know that there's a couple other threads about packs. I don't think they cover all my questions and needs...
I am looking for a pack that is capable of holding enough gear for a 1 week deer hunting trip(don't worry about meat hauling it won't be done with this pack)but also has the capability of carrying a rather large rifle. I did say deer season and in wisconsin that means cold weather. I need to be able to attach additional gear as well i.e tent, sleeping gear, etc.
Those are the main guide lines but I would like to have several compartments to hold shooting supplies and camping supplies separate. I prefer to stay quite organized.

I really appreciate any information on what to look for and recommendations because there are so many packs (sizes and styles) that it's overwhelming!!

how about the eberlestock skycrane?

it also depends on how you pack. if you go alone, it will be more stuff for you to carry. if i hang out with a friend in some valley, we can split tent and other equipment such that it's actually notably less for each one ...

and it depends alot on what gear you need. the longer i hunt (with age?), the less things i find to be necessary - and other stuff that i consider more like luxury if there is spare space.

so far i use a gunslinger 2 and i'm more than happy with it.

I will be in a group with a total of 5 maybe 6 people. I think that a 5000c.i. pack is large enough to carry what I need but honestly i'm not sure I haven't done a trip like this before.

you would be surprised what you can pack into a 5000 c.i. pack.

5000ci = 80 liters? for a week? you'll have alot of spare space.

for comparison: a 60 l (about 3500 ci) was more than enough for 2 weeks of hiking on iceland with a tent+sleeping, provisions, photo-gear ... (Okay, tent was strapped to outside)

it's not only about the size of the pack. it's also about knowing what you need and what you don't need.

how about getting a pack with about 3000 ci, then add molle-sidebags to it that you can remove and drop off in the tent? because you'll only have that one backpack with you ... so dragging around an 80l pack all day long (with only 20l of stuff in it) won't be fun either.

The main thing I needed to know was what size pack I needed because I haven't gone on a trip like this before. Thanks guys for the info I'll definitely take into consideration of a detachable pack.

how about a list of equipment that you might want to bring along, and then you check how large the pack has to be? rather than first talking about a pack ... and then starting to think of what you would fill it up with.

I had good experiences with Badlands 4500. Sitka makes a great pack too. You need to gather up all your gear and determine how much pack you need before you drop 300 bucks on a pack. Go to a good sprting goods store and try on several and pick the one that fits you the best. It will make a huge differnce once you start getting miles under your boots.

60 to 70 liter size would be plenty. Mostly go with what feels comfortable. Gregory makes some great packs, you can load them up very well and still be comfortable.

4,000 c.i. = 65 liters this is a perfect hunting pack for me, and I hunt like you.
