Another PSL question

I just bought a Romanian PSL that has a Century Arms receiver, serial number PSL0005XX. I was under the impression that all PSLs held the bolt back after the last round. Mine does not. Recently I read that they started leaving the bolt hold-open device out of the newer guns. I thought the magazine follower held the bolt open, but now I have been told that there is an actual piece inside the PSL that holds it open. Can anyone here straighten this out for me? I am thoroughly confused.

Thanks!

Re: Another PSL question

Mag follower, pushes up on spring loaded bolt stop on mine. Basicly same as ar, except it can't be released outside the reciever.

Re: Another PSL question

2ndamendfan: I know this might be asking a lot, but is there any way you could post a picture of the bolt stop? Also, how old is your PSL and who is the importer/manufacturer? I am thinking that the newer ones are leaving out the bolt stop.

Thanks to both of you for your response.

Re: Another PSL question

also have a 3x9 FFP eastern block scope for it (mounts on side rail) instead of the scope it came with (which i still have also)

The older guns are actually Romanian built rifles while the newer one Century sales are put togather here from parts kits. Some may have Romanian recievers but mostly built with US reciever and US made barrels. You really want an older Romanian gun,it will say made in Cugir on the reciever.

IIRC the above is correct. I bought one of the early ones of Cugir manufacture has bolt hold open and came with mags numbered to the rifle and original military issue scope. Shoots as well as my SVD.

Re: Another PSL question

Mine doesn't say Cugir on it. Does say made in romania. And I believe I have the issue scope. The other scope I have (3x9 PSOP that is FFP) I bought seperately. I checked and I bought mine in april '02. As far as century goes that would explain why they have gotten cheaper and why the last few I have seen for sale the wood does not match at all and looks like crap.

Re: Another PSL question

You guys are great! Thanks for the pictures. I will pull mine from the safe this weekend and see if it has the bolt stop. I also emailed Century with the same question, but have not received a response. Their manual states it has the bolt hold device, but I don't think it does (or at least it doesn't work). I'll report back what I find.

Too bad some US manufacturer doesn't build a good SVD....or make a .30 carbine in the 5.7x28mm (PS90) round.

Re: Another PSL question

So the guns made with Century receivers have a new US made barrel? If this is true, I feel much better about my CAI PSL. I have never shot it.

BTW, my Century PSL doesn't have a BHO lever like the Saigas. I am assuming the mag follower locks the bolt back? If so, I am disappointed. I want mine to run just like an AK.

Check out Dragunov.net. They have a lot of info about the PSLs on their site with some good photos.

Thought you didn't have one. How does it shoot and what kind of scope you have?

Re: Another PSL question

Well I have the one it came with and also a PSOP 3x9 that is FFP. I use that one for the PSL, the original goes on a "nagant" and I have another "com block" 4x I believe that I run on a "VEPR"

I would agree with others here that it is a 2-3 MOA rifle. Biggest problem is ammo, that is one reason a 308, chambering would be nice. if you want to see it let me know.

Re: Another PSL question

Century's response:

<span style="color: #000099">Good Morning:
This rifle was assembled using a US made receiver and original lined barrel. For different reasons during the development process, it was decided to delete the hold open device. The operation is otherwise unchanged. The serial number indicates the rifle was assembled here in April 2010, being sold one month later as item RI1618-X.

Re: Another PSL question

I will check it out Saturday. I'm interested if it is simply a missing bolt-stop, or if the receiver has been machined without any bolt-stop provision. I'll post the results.

Re: Another PSL question

Mine does not have the bolt-hold device or the block the sliding bolt-hold device sits in. There is simply a round pin across the receiver at that point.
