So I placed my preorder for the patriot valley arms tripod and wouldn't you know it I found what I think is a very good deal locally. It's a Gitzo carbon fiber mountaineer. Specs look very close to the pva tripod other than the gitzo is slightly shorter, slightly lighter, gitzo has a short center column, less weight capacity, and has 3 piece legs instead of 4 piece.

I have never used a nice tripod, my only experience was last weekend at my first rifle match and I'm hooked. I didn't find much on the gitzo searching snipershide but seems to be a popular tripod for photography.

The Gitzo locally is $250 vs PVA pre order price of $499.

Can you guys give me some help here, I could use the extra funds for other shooting supplies but don't want to wish I would have spent more and end up having to buy something better in the next year. Use will be range practice and prs type events.

I wanted to buy the RRS legs with the Anvil-30. I still will, just not today.

You’d be better served with a PIG 311 from shadow tech at half the cost.

This.

I went with the PIG 0311 and the RRS leveling head. I don't have a ton of experience with this (or tripods for shooting), however, I am pleased with what I got at the price point I did. After a few nights of dry fire and building positions, I felt pretty stable behind it. I took the practice to the range and while my groups are larger than prone off a bipod, it's manageable.

I'm spending the money saved on training. I figure that I'll get more return on investment.

Gitzo is a quality tripod, on par with RRS very durable and reliable. The item you are considering is an older model, not sure what gen but based on the cross-bolts and locks it's a few years old. It would probably make you a pretty decent starter tripod and maybe all you would ever need. As far as a fair price, search the model on Ebay and compare the listings to see if it's priced comparatively, you might find a comparison for $100 or so ..............you never know.

I ended up picking it up after looking at it. It seems very solid. Definitely more so than the tripods I looked at last week at the match. I also picked up a RRS BH55 ballhead off the px here and waiting for that to come in. I feel it was a good purchase so far. At some point in the future if I decide I need better I will upgrade and probably won't loose much selling the gitzo.

Once I get the ball head I will try and leave some feedback here.
