Hunting & Fishing Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

While I've not shot a deer with my 223ai, I will be shooting 62 grains TSX bullets behind 26.3-4ish grains of TAC, 8 twist barrel. Brad Arnett and Shootone roll with a similar load, I think, and they've killed more than a few deer with theirs.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

What kind of velocity do you get out of that load? I'm getting 3350 with moly 62's and H335 from my 21" 223AI. I have some TAC to try but haven't done it yet. All I've stuck with the 62TSX was a pig, but it worked pretty well.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

I don't have any chronograph data on it yet, unfortunately. My load of 26.3 Grains of TAC with 75 amaxes shows 3050 in Quickload with a 22" barrel, for what it's worth....

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Late friend of mine shot one with a 77gr SMK out of a 20" 1-9tw barrel with MV of ~2900fps. Perfect broadside hit at 100yds. Deer dropped dead right there. Bullet detonated on impact. Massive fragmentation. Pieces of the bullet were found just about everywhere. Would I suggest using a that particular combination again? Only if there were nothing more "suitable" for the task. Will it work? I think thats obvious, its just that I believe that there are better options.

Thats MY opinion anyways.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

I have a very accurate .223 Les Baer AR with a Surefire can and 8" twist. Shoot 70 gr BTS and it is deadly. This if for culling does and not hunting. Kills from any angle that lines up with vitals. I know it would kill big bucks, but why would you want to? I use it for culling does due to multiple shot opp's that are not present in trophy hunting. I also move and cover a lot of land. It is a very portable rifle. I have also used some 77 gr SMK's and they are fine as well. I would use the BTS, if possible. JMO

that is what i plan on using this year

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Shot them out to 350yds with 23.5grs of Benchmark and 69gr SMK. The ones up close go down pretty quick while the ones out further run a 100 or so yds. The load works well for me but shot placement important as always.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

I grew up on a remmy 7 in 223, using whatever the local walmart had put the deer on the ground year after year. Just make a good shot and the rest will fall into place.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Oh, hell yeah. Im sure some here know my position on it. I LOVE the 223remmy for whitetail deer out to 350-ish yds 400 may be a bit of a stretch for alot of shooters. Get a good consistent load for your rifle, and ONLY take a CNS shot if you KNOW you can put the pill right were you want it at any distance over the 250yd or so range. A good Barnes bullet put in the vitals always worked well for me, generally droped 'em right there. If not a DRT shot, I don't recall one ever running more than 40-50 yards. I used it the majority of the time to shoot em at the posterior base of the ear and never had one run a bit. All, that being said, if you want to use a 223 remmy for decent size deer, you should be proficient enough with your system to make a CNS shot at any distance your gonna shoot. So, I've pretty much foregone the vitals/thoracic cavity shots in favor of head/spinal cord shots at all ranges I'll shoot one with the .223 Rem.
WHEW!(takes a breath)

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Hi Frankie, I've shot them with 223/223AI's with both 75Amax's and 62TSX's. I'll take the 62TSX over the 75Amax any day of the week. Personally if a guy was going to run the 75Amax I'd say stay away from bone and poke them in the lungs. I've only shot deer out to about 250yds with the 223AI, but would feel comfortable stretching that further if I had too.

If your rifle isn't twisted fast enough to run the 62 then just run the 53TSX. Like was already mentioned, there are a few good bullets available. The 55TBBC (if you can still find them), Nosler makes a 60gr partition, Barnes has their TSX's, the win 64PP....etc.

What rifle are you running? Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.

Hey Brad I was waiting for you to chim in,I have a shilen 26" 8 twist that I shoot 75 Sciroccos in at 3000fps and .4 MOA,But the swift's where ment for my XCR tactical 20" 223 9 twist it shot 12" at 100 yards with them ! The XCR shoots .5 MOA with 75bthp so the Sciroccos are now for the 26" shilen gun,but it's to long for my taste,I have 10 barnes 62TSX loaded for a test run when I go shooting soon. I would rather hunt with the XCR tactical 20".

I am after a good deer if we meet this year I hope to put him on the wall,he has left me upset 2 years now and getting bigger !

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

I used the 40g GS Custom HV bullet at 3800fps out of my FIL's 700 SPS Varmint 26 inch barrel. I shot an eight point KY whitetail at about 40 yards and he hopped twice, walked in a circle and fell right down. The shot was quartering away and the bullet penetrated out the opposite shoulder.

It worked well, I have some loaded up again for this season if I decide to try it again.

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

Smoked a couple of doe last year with 77gr SMKs out of 1-7 twist Noveske. Head shots at 100-150 yards --- drops 'em like a sack of potatoes.

Is the CO going to pull one and weigh it....(grin). (Just kidding, I'm not advocating that anyone break the rules.)

Maybe rules like that is what lead to Barnes coming out with a 55gr TSX this year???

Re: Any 223 white tail hunters here ?

I've shot a few with the .223. The closes was 30yds and the furthest one was 380yds. Out of the handful of deer I've shot with the .223, I'm pretty impressed with the overall job it does on Mr. WT.

I'll be gunning some 62g TXS or 75g Swifts if my light weight .223ai is back in for our Rifle opener.

LOL good point.

But our game wardens sometimes get a bad rap for being a little aggressive. I have heard of some asking to see the scar on shoulders of hunters who have gotten a permit from their doctor to use a crossbow during archery season.

If it were me I'd tell em to kiss it.
