Gunsmithing Any decent dremels for 50 dollars?

Re: Any decent dremels for 50 dollars?

I would skip the rechargeable and go with the variable speed dremel that plugs in. I look for deals at the pawn shops where kits w/ attachments can be had in the $20 range.

I like the Dremel brand because parts and accessories are more popular and will interchange.

+1 I wouldn't get the rechargable one.

Re: Any decent dremels for 50 dollars?

I have a 400 XPR Dremel myself which is still going strong after 2 years of abuse. Go for the corded version. Anything that is worth doing with a dremel will require more juice than a battery will provide and a battery is just going to cost more in the long run.

Here's a nice starter kit from Home Depot for about $65

I have both corded and cordless. Cordless is junk unless I just need to surface-clean 1 bolt or something small. Battery life is crap.

Pawn shops and second hand stores are your friend.

I got my Dremel 4000 for $55 at a pawn shop. Remember, pawn shops have a list price and a haggle price. Haggle and see what you can get away with. Worst they will tell you is NO.

just dont let your wife use it. my first one hacked years of abuse i dished out but the first time she tried to use it(cutting plstic the way i hear it told) the motor burned out. i think she had the whip kinked probably. she did buy me a new one tho.

Re: Any decent dremels for 50 dollars?

Mine is a variable 3 speed Black and Decker RTX rotary tool takes all the same bits as the Dremel, you can get it at WalMart or any other home improvement stores, (Lowes, Ace, Do-It Center) for about $30. I like the idea of a Dremel kit, but the chance of using half the crap that comes in the kit isn't very good.

I have found it better, in my own opinion, to pick up a small bit kit for storage, and then purchase necessary bits as the need arises.

+1 on the Black and Decker. My corded "Wizard" rotary tool is 20+ years old and still works perfectly. I'd sooner be without a hammer than a rotary tool.

Re: Any decent dremels for 50 dollars?

I couldn't find the black and decker at any local stores, so I got the Dremel 200 for 40 bucks at Walmart. It was worth the extra ten bucks I suppose. I already used it to cut the heads of some 1/4 x 28 bolts for the bedding job I am about to attempt.

Wire in a dimmer switch, ten dollar fix that will save buying another.
