Is there any significant difference in the SPS tactical and the VTR. I see the VTR has a built in brake but other than that is it worth the extra coin?

Rifle will be 223 if that makes any difference to the above.

Re: Any difference - SPS tactical and VTR

I had the VTR and I was not a huge fan. Youll save yourself a lot of money by going with the Tactical also, and youll gain the heavy barrel.

In fact, I replaced my VTR with the SPS Tactical haha So that would be my recommendation

EDIT: Sorry really didnt answer any questions did I? haha

The stock on the VTR is the basic Remington Injected Molded Plastic Stock, only its OD Green (oooooo lol). Barrel is the new "Triangle" Barrel, and it has an integrated muzzle brake. The barrel is 22", but technically the brake is the last 2" so its a 20".

The Tactical has the Houge Rubber Stock and the SuperCell Recoil pad, still a cheap stock, but an upgrade I suppose. It has a 20" heavy barrel and thats about it haha

I paid $750 for the VTR and $580 for the Tactical (both of mine in .223 also). If I had to do it all again, I would skip the VTR totally. Not worth the extra at all IMHO. You are paying for their fancy new barrel design and the cruddy brake, which on the .223 not really needed anyways.

Have a .223 sps tac. Got it because of the faster twist. Its not too bad. Its not a very good stock, but I have seen much worse on rifles in this range. A friend has one in a manners w/minichassis and its very accurate for a stock rifle. So much so that I was planning on having one built but after his, I went the same direction.

In my oppinion no, not only is it not worth the extra, but its a less desirable configuration in general.

Very true. But then again if you are serious about shooting and you buy a Remington rifle you probably have plans to ditch their stock anyways haha

Re: Any difference - SPS tactical and VTR

thanks guys, that's the info I was looking for.

The rifle will be going in an AICS so the stock isn't an issue. I figured the VTR would be a waste of coin and no real gain in quality, but decided I'd ask first.

Re: Any difference - SPS tactical and VTR

if you plan to replace the stock, get the sps-v. the varmint comes with the same stock as the vtr, only in black, but costs less than the tactical i believe. i think everything else is the same between the tactical and varmint though.

+1 again for this very intelligent Hide Member. Thats the reason I went with the tactical, the twist in the varmint was not as versatile as the tactical.

The price different (at least at my shop) was about $30 between the Tactical and Varmint.

remington lists the twist on both as 12" in a .308...

Re: Any difference - SPS tactical and VTR

I had a SPS varmint in .223 (1/12 twist). It was a tackdriover with 55 grain bullets. Could barely stay on paper at 200 yards with fgmm 69 grain cartridges. I "upgraded" to the .223 700P. Good shooter, but not the laser like the varmint with the right lad. Still trying to figure out what it likes.
