My son is thinking about getting one and wants some opinions. He's on a budget and can't afford a full custom chassis rifle. He's has a couple custom bolt guns so he wants one that will shoot. He's thinking 308 because he already has a couple 6.5's
What's your thought's?

My thoughts? Steer away from Remington. Their QC is not what it used to be and there are so much better options for what you're going to pay for a Remington. Don't get me wrong, I love the 700 action, when it's done right. They don't do it well anymore.

Alternatives include Tikka, Bergara, Howa, Ruger RPR. If I was doing this all over again with the knowledge I have now, I'd start with a Tikka CTR in a 6.5mm flavor.

EDITED FOR MORE INFORMATION

With what you're going to pay on a PCR, you're going to get a better rifle in the same price range with other options.
Tikka CTR - $998
Howa Bravo - $1279
Howa HCR - $1379
Bergara B-14 - $1150
Ruger RPR - $1599 (deals can be found on these, especially first gens)

RPRs cost like $900

I'd look harder at a Tikka CTR for $900 as well

Or any tikka you can find for sub $500 with a KRG Bravo Chassis and prefit barrel from PVA or elsewhere

Is it just me, but it sounds like your son is moving in the wrong direction in his shooting endeavors 6.5 to 308, "He's has a couple custom bolt guns" to a stock Remington 700 PCR.......LOL

I’m confused. MULTIPLE custom 6.5s in hand... Those can be used to hunt and target shoot with. Put one of them in a chassis?

I don’t know why anybody would buy a Remington, especially now, after owning more that one custom rifle, unless you were ready to spend some $$$ to true and rebarrel. Better options from other manufacturers now.

Is he just bored and looking for something else? Are those 6.5s he has hunting oriented rifles and he’s now looking for a tactical/chassis heavy barrel rig?

If he wants a chassis rifle but not willing or unable to go custom this time dueto budget, I'll recommend a Howa chassis rifle. My HCR costed me less than 900 bucks last summer and it is s great factory rifle that shoots pretty damn good.

Being that ( Tikka) T3's are being liquidated dirt cheap at EuroOptic, I'd go that route and a good pre fit in whatever flavor and have money left over for a decent stock/ chassis or just pick up one of the hunters and be done with it. Not sure why he's looking for a lighter hunting rifle but looking at heavier factory chassis rifles?

I'd get a 700 5r Magpul Enhanced which is a 5r in a magpul hunter stock you can find them for $900 in 308 with a 20" and it comes with an extended bolt knob, threaded barrel, cerakoted barrel and action, a scope rail and a bipod. Then sell the magpul stock and drop it in an XLR Element.
