Any other Falconers here?

I met a guy in Albuquerque that had his falcon with him on the patio of a little bar/pub. VERY cool! Talked to him for several hours about falconing and sounds like an awesome hobby/sport, but unfortunately, I've already got WAY too many EXTREMELY expensive hobbies as it is.

Love the pictures though! Thanks for sharing!

It was more than likely one of two people, both my friends. One habituates local outdoor places in town to help man his birds.

Well he had a hilarious story about getting the police called to his house fora domestic disturbance because his bird was screaming like a banshee and his nneighbors thought he was beating a woman! He said he had a tough time explaining it to the cops til he showed them the bird and it shrieked again!

Yup. Thats my buddy Terence. Falconers are a small community.

Id imagine a dedicated community.

Gots to be a ton of work in a modern world. Probably alot easier for nomads roaming the steppes on their sturdy ponies with no more needs than a village to plunder and having their buddy catch them a rodent for rations.

MT ,me and the wife went to Dalhousie Castle in Scotland for a Falcon course and I was blown away with how much I enjoyed it. I quickly realized how much I didnt know about birds of prey and how cool it was. I too would like info on how to start in the sport. We actually started the 3 day course with this tiny little owl, then moved to the bigger birds, I ended up with a Russian Eagle which somehow got circulated in my unit and is now featured on almost every BUB or CUB briefing. Falconry, the sport of Kings! And utterly badass.

Please regale us with stories of your experiences! I always really enjoy listening to someone talk about a hobby they truly love, especially one I know very little about.

I have been a Falconer for 20 years so the stories are long and twisted. Basically to get started in Falconry you would contact your state first. There is an exam that you will need to study for. Pass that then build facilities for your bird and find a Falconer to sponsor you. In this sport you must apprentice under another Falconer for two years. Pm if you are truly interested and I can help in getting some contacts. I can tell you Falconry isn't a sport. Its a lifestyle. It will ruin you for all other hunting. This I promise you. If interested to keep birds and look cool dont bother. It is a hunting sport, we just use birds instead of shotguns. When properly executed there is nothing like it, nothing. Pure adrenalin.

Damn. Even your comment was INTENSE! Are there ever events that the public can come out and watch? Seems utterly fascinating.

"I can tell you Falconry isn't a sport. Its a lifestyle." This was the conclusion I came to when I researched BOP. I love birds! I ended up going a slightly different direction and went down the exotic bird "lifestyle" instead but always think about BOP's. I particularly like owls. I have 2 Macaws and my wife has an Amazon.
