Maggie’s Any scotch drinkers out there?

Re: Any scotch drinkers out there?

Chivas is a blend and not a single malt, so you won't be looking for any central characteristics. I suggest you drink it any way you want, probably on the rocks or with water. If you mix it with Coke, you will incur the wrath of dead Celts who will visit you in your nightmares. The very best way is to drink it with your son

Generally speaking, a good single-malt should be consumed "straight up", without any additives. If you are feeling adventurous, a tiny splash of room temperature water will open up the flavors of a good scotch.

I am a big fan of the Islay single-malts. Personal favorites include Bowmore 12-15 year, Talisker 12-15 year, and Laphroaig 15-18 year vintages. If you can't handle the peat (Islay Scotch is *strong*), a Highland Scotch is probably a better choice. Tullibardine 14 year, and Glen Moray 12 year are all good. (Yes, technically, Talisker is an Isle of Skye product vs. Islay)... details...

I don't do much blended Scotch, but when shooting over there, I was awarded a bottle of Famous Grouse as a prize (prizes in Scotland tend to small medals and LARGE bottles of Scotch!) it wasn't bad stuff!

That was what I was thinking DaveX when I bought it. He will have to get a little older, and something great to celebrate, maybe when he has a son, or daughter.

Laphroaig 10 years is my standard scotch. I also really like Lagavulin. Truth be told I've never had a single malt I didn't like. I like to have the first dram nice and neat and then follow up with a spoonful of water in the next glass. A bit of water will open up the scotch and you will notice the expanded flavors. I had a treat not to long ago at a scotch tasting....

Falconer: Yes Laphroaig is very peaty/smokey as is Lagavulin. I like the peaty scotches as the taste hangs on for a bit longer. The 30 year was the "Belle of the Ball" at a recent whiskey tasting I went to. A friend and I managed to secure more than our fair share in a plastic cup while no one was looking and crafted a good buzz from the good stuff. Not very classy I know but these opportunities are rare and 30 year Laphroaig has always been beyond my budget. Cheers!

I had my first glass of Cutty a couple nights ago. I've always been a Johnny Black or GL 12yr drinker, but I was at a friends house and thats all he had. I choked it down to be appreciative, but good god that shit was terrible.

A friend of mine knew I drank "Scotch" and gave me a half-gallon of Cutty Sark that he had since the mid 70's. I didn't know if I should thank him or cuss him

He meant well, so I thanked him
