Mayberry MD (near Westminster MD) runs tactical matches - carbine, precision, team - about once every two months. They do a great job. Up in PA, Black Hat has got an amazing lineup of matches. Couple other ranges running tactical matches in PA. In WV, their is the king daddy, ASC. I'm sure there are others in that state. Other folks can speak to OH. In VA, there are a few private tactical matches, that I don't have authority to invite anyone too. USMC Base Quantico runs a good number of matches, but none of them would be called "tactical" (they run Benchrest, NRA type stuff, F-class, etc). Good luck!

There are several good matches coming up in NC that are listed right here in the Tac Comps forum on SH. If you are looking for good matches right in your back yard, good luck with that. But if you keep your eyes open right here on SH I think you can find some good ones that are a reasonable distance. Some travel will likely be involved if you want to compete in the sport, you will need to balance how bad you want to shoot in matches against the distance/time/cost involved. Best of luck!

Where in VA are you located?
I'm hosting a match in Feb in Elizabeth City (search 2012 PPRS) which is 40 mins couth of Chesapeake/ Va Beach area. I'm drawing alot of shooters from VA for the event.

Woodys DSM in Dec and again in the spring, JST Juniper Swamp and flatlanders match are in my queue. No date yet but the PMG matches in Cookeville TN are well worth the drive.
