So I'm set to go to an LE sniper school later this year. Gonna take my personal customized 10fp with Leupold 4.5-14. I've got my wind meter, range finder, data book, and spotting scope. I'm wondering if there is anything else that I might want to look at taking with me? I'll take the basics of course, ammo, pack, rain gear, etc. We'll only be shooting out to 600yds, so it shouldn't be too bad. I've got a program on my HTC for ballistics. I'll be shooting Fed GM ammo.

I'm looking for tips and items that I might want to have, kinda like extras or being prepared. I can provide more info and a better list of gun mods and misc items that I'll take with me as well. Thanks, Jason

Any school worth their salt should provide you with a MINIMUM gear list.

Electronic ballistic computers are great, but print out some dope cards. I like my handheld, but I keep a drop chart taped in my scope cap.

A rear bag is always nice to have.
Bug Juice and Sunscreen.
Ibuprofen
ball cap or boonie
Shemag....(while these are "tacticool" they can be great to keep the sun or icy wind off the back of your neck. They are also great for shielding your optics from glare if you have the sun directly behind you.
Camelbak
Poncho for your gear (it has dumped on me at least one day on every school I have ever been to)
waterproof bags for all your gear.

If you are going to be doing any position shooting a PRS tripod will work great.

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

Yeah, got the rear bag, I think, I'll have rain gear and the screen, bug spray. I do need to get some drop charts built or bought. Anybody know where I can get some for gold medal match? I think snipercentral has some, but not sure their for that particular ammo and out of a 24" barrel.

The schemagen sounds like a good idea. That's what I'm looking for is the outside of the box items that aren't on the list. Thanks

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

Depending on when you go to school, U.S. Tactical Supply has laminated cards for 168 gr. at 2600 fps. out of a 24 " barrel. The newer FGMM's are pushing 2650 fps. I would suggest shooting and doping to compare the difference between what the cards read and what your stick shoots. Id also bring every thing you would need for rilfe / scope & ring maintenance / malfunction issues. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

I am going to chrono it with the FGMM as I don't normally shoot that. I shoot my own loads, however these don't meet what the department policy states because they are ballistic tips and not HP. I run about 2650fps with my loads shooting 168gr Amax. The thing about that is the factory remington premier match with 168gr Sierra HPBT shoots the same POA as my loads do.

The tool kit is on my list of things to have as well. I still have to get some more AI mags to have (what I feel is enough).

Wasn't there somebody on the hide that was selling/making the shemags? I may have spelled it wrong in my search!
Thanks for the info guys and the ideas.

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

TJ, two mags will be enough. Most guys will run internal mags and you wont be running an IPSC Course with a sniper rifle.

Dont get hung up on balistic charts as they change as temp, elevation etc change. Get basic balistic data for weapon at an average for your AO and make a chart to tape to side of stock, so you dont loose it. I suggest you get elevation of AO and average temp to get enough dope to hit. Then get actual dope from shooting. record all this in a Data book which you need for LE work.

Comfort stuff is a big plus, the cool dish cloth around face is nice but you will want knee pads far worse after a couple of days on them. The gloves will save arse when you start crawling in briars and for these just Orchard Supply leather ones will do fine. I would not run the fancy Nomaz Pilot gloves as they offer crap protection.

Make sure you have good mat because the days get long on your belly.

Dont forget something to clense scope lenses with as they tend to get dirty and your BDU shirt is harsh on the lenses.

Next is dont forget snivel gear if you end up on an all night op post. Poncho and liner are nice for keeping weather off. Just the Gortex Bivy sack will save bacon in rain storm with pouncho being the cover over head while rest of body is inside, for a dry ffp. This will keep you and gear warm and dry.

Munches will keep your head in game when you have been in ffp for a few hours and stomach reminds you, it is still a part of you. Same with water

You will probably need compass for building range cards. A gps is always nice as well.

Laser will save lots of time for ranging.

Now they covered primary weapon but make sure you have a secondary weapon, such as pistol and a couple of spare mags if the course allows it.

Same old things apply here.
Bullets and ways to deliver
beans/ eat and drink
bivy gear to stay sfae, uninjured, warm and dry

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

Another +1 on a PRS Large tripod, I just took a class last week and my tripod never left my side, we rarely shoot prone in our profession and a tripod is a fantatstic piece of gear to have.

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

Another tip if you get yourself a tripod, Take it out to a level surface with your rifle and find a comfortable position using the tripod in a seated, kneeling and standing position. Use a sharpie to mark the legs at those positions. You'll have a baseline to where you need to make your adjustments. That will save you some fumbling before the class.

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

Awesome info guys! This will be my first course, as a newbie to "sniping", but not necessarily to LR shooting. I'm just trying to get ideas to try to assure that I have all I need at this class. Thanks

Re: any tips for LE sniper course?

It's a basic course, intro if you will. I haven't got a list yet, but the class is designed for LE designated marksman or sniper. From what I understand, there is no stalking or guillie type stuff. I'm afraid that I can't provide any more info really because I don't really have any more then that at this time. I do appreciate all your info and ideas/thoughts fellas.
