How'd it turn out?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to spray a neat even application of matt black duracoat onto a barrel that is going to have an A2 FSB. I was wondering if I ought to use 400 grit paper to sand down about a 2 inch length of the barrel gas block area so the A2 FSB can slide over it and not scratch-off the paint. (but not the whole area, just the portion in front of the gas hole)

If I try to spray the length of the barrel, and try to slide the FSB over it later, the paint will be too thick and scratch off, or it will be too tight to install it altogether.

Are you talking about painting just the barrel with the FSB in place, or painting everything?

If I just sprayed over everything, including the FSB, it would obvious that it's not parkerizing. Everything would be covered in one solid color and all the joints filled with paint.

If you're talking about masking the FSB and just trying to spray the 1" of barrel between the front and back of it, that would likely tricky to do. Not to mention the FSB would be hard to take off later on I imagine with paint locking it in place.

It shouldn't be an issue to take it off, paint it, and reinstall it really. If you're concerned about that, then simply tape off the barrel where the sight sits and paint it. Then it will slip right back on. If you don't tape it off, I would make sure to give it more then ample time before reassembling the sight to the barrel. Duracoat really doesn't take up that much space, but some are really tight. I've done a couple and I just taped the barrel off where the sights sits, but I painted one for a friend and we just left it together and removed the sight post and internals before painting. It looked good, but I don't recall if it was noticeable that it was painted as an assembly or not.

I'd have the barrel Cerakoted, Duracoat is too thick and scratches too easy for that application (Trust me, I've done it). The Duracoat was too thick for the FSB to slide over, so on one I had to sand it down, and on the next one I had to mask off that area of the barrel.

With Cerakote, it comes out of the oven, you slide your FSB right back on over the Cerakote, re-pin it, and you're all set. You also would have a coating on the metal inside the FSB, which left raw can bleed rust if you get your gun wet.

if you paint the gap under the A2 then it is gonna get scratched if you remove it. Doesn't matter DuraCoat or Cerakote.

Taking the FSB off is not an issue. It's already off. I've ordered Duracoat already, and so duracoat it will be. (not ceracoat)

I'm nervous about sanding off enough thousandth's of metal from the barrel so the FSB can have enough clearance to slide over that painted area of the barrel. I hope when I slide the FSB back into postion, the pins will do all that is necessary to hold the FSB firmly n place. I don't need to sand the barrel down at the area of the gas port. I will have that area masked. Hopefully that short section and the two FSB pins will be enough to hold the FSB tight in place.

I'm using cerakote, which goes on thin. I recently did a barrel without the fsb and the gas block didn't have any problem sliding on and the finish didn't get scratched. I've also done the complete assembly with the FSB pinned to the barrel. If I wasn't changing out the gas block, I'd spray it while all together just because the job comes out just as nice and there's less time consumed.
