Anyone bed a switch barrel rifle?

I built a 260 thinking I may use it as a switch barrel rifle. It shoots well, and I'm thinking of bedding it. It's a SSS stock on a Savage Long Action (started out in life as a 300 Win Mag) with a Shilen barrel.

Since it's initial concept was to be a switch barrel, I don't know if that's even possible - to bed it. If I do, wouldn't the recoil log end up in a slightly different position depending on the barrel and head spacing? Can it be done - to bed a switch barrel rifle then do the switch?

Your thoughts?

Re: Anyone bed a switch barrel rifle?

All my switch barrels were done on actions that had the lug built into the action like a Surgeon and i used the same barrel contour for the different barrels. Not sure how the Savage works due to the barrel nut. I guess you could do a pinned recoil lug and have the barrels chambered like you do on the other actions if you wanted to go that route. I am sure someone will chime in and give you better advice than me.

Agreed. I asked this question to every smith I considered for my build. Everyone of them recommended an action with the lug machined into the action like a Surgeon, which is why I went with a Surgeon build. I'm sure I'll add a .260 barrel sometime in the future.

.

I have four switch barrel rifles and only one has an integral recoil lug. All others have pinned recoil lug.
And, all are pillar bedded or skin bedded on stock.

Once the barrel is free floated, and the recoil lug is pinned (or any other mean of fixing it to the action), I dont see any problem in bedding the action.

Why would the recoil lug be in a different position. The recoil lug on a savage is pinned. It mates up to the front of the action. Just make sure the same lug is used every time you switch the barrel. Don't bed the barrel nut area of the stock because that could be in a slightly different position.

Re: Anyone bed a switch barrel rifle?

Bedding a switch barrel action would carry all of the benafits of bedding any other rifle.

The only possible drawback I could see is the propensity to remove an action from its bedding surface more often with a switch barrel set-up. How much of a drawback, if one at all, would depend on if you even remove your action from the stock for barrel changes, and how likely you might be to damage any of the bedding durring the switch.

I have not bedded my rifle, but then again I dont remove my stock to change barrels.
