Anyone build their own tube gun?

Anyone who is not a gunsmith that's built their own tube gun? I took a 300 win mag savage, scavanged the action, added a barrel, stock, bolt etc and created a 260. It shoots well, but I'm looking for something more. I'm thinking the next step should be a tube gun, but I'm undecided.

My previous build was relatively inexpensive, whereas tube guns look to be somethere in the 1.5 to 2k range I'm guessing. Actions are anywhere from 700 and change to upwards of 1200 alone, add the other ocmponents and I may be pushing >2k. If this is going to take a year - maybe it's something I would do.

How difficult a project is it. I'm by no means a smith - I work in my basement chopping, hacking, sawing and filing - that's about the extent of it. I can't mill or bore etc so that's out of the question. Is it possible?

I'm looking for a real bonafide I built it myself satisfaction tack driver. The 260 comes close - mostly because I come close - it's far more accurate than I am, but I want to try this (I think).

Anyone have experience in doing this?

The other question I have is - since it's so easy to swap barrels on the 260 now (I have the tools and gauges), is it worth it to simply pick up a new barrel and just swap it out? It's built on a Savage long action, and I can't help but think that some of the variance in shooting is due to the action not being trued, but again I don't know. A swap barrel is a cheap way to go - has or does anyone shoot 6mmBR on a long action? What are your thoughts along this path?

I'm just looking for thoughts and other opinions. Thanks....

Re: Anyone build their own tube gun?

Take the easier route and just buy a McRee Precision, XLR Industries, or PDC Custom chassis stock for your Savage. No bedding, tube-like, etc. They have LA chassis systems that enable you to use AICS mags for the Savage.

As far as truing the Savage action, not sure you'd see any significant gains. Search for the bolt mod thread on this site to make the bolt lift smoother. How accurate is your .260 now? Are you reloading for it?

Re: Anyone build their own tube gun?

I have a tube gun build on the Eliseo R5 in 6mmBR. It is built on a Remington 700 short action. I'm getting between .25 and .5 MOA at 600 yds depending on how well I'm shooting at the time. I shoot it in our local F-Class matches at 600 yds with scope and 600 highpower prone with iron sights. I had the action rebarreled by a gunsmith and all the other work I did myself.

Re: Anyone build their own tube gun?

Fngmike - the .260 shoots about .75 - .60 as it is now. I get occasional fliers, but there's no doubt it's me. All in all they're all still under an MOA. I'm chasing the little bitty bug hole challange and like an addict I'm hooked. Some day.......

I looked at the chassis's recommended and the XLR looks to be the most promising. I shot them an email and am waiting for a reply now.

Is anyone shooting SA cartridges on a LA or should I change over to SA? does it make one bit of difference?

Thanks.....

Re: Anyone build their own tube gun?

I have a MAK tubegun and could not be happier with the performance. I glued the barreled action in myself: pretty simple. Tubeguns are popular because they are extremely accurate at a lower price point than other custom rifles.
