I was just curious if anyone has customed a browning a-bolt or x-bolt even and have pictures. I understand the aftermarket parts are slim but has anyone done it. Mine shoots great and am debating if its worth trying.

Re: Anyone custom a Browning A-Bolt?

I have never owned a Browning so i cannot say from experience whatsoever nor am i a gunsmith or claim I know much about brownings at all, so take this information lightly. I have a friend with an A-bolt that the headspace seemed to stretch a bit in. His gunsmith told him that brownings have very fine weak action and barrel threads and it is very easy to cross thread or strip the threads on their action. So I have been leery since, however if you were to build a more custom rifle on the action and trued the action such you would on a Remington you could probably re-thread the action with a more course thread rate and solve the problem I would bet.

Re: Anyone custom a Browning A-Bolt?

I have a browning A-bolt 300 win mag and have gone through the same thing your going through. from what i have found it's pretty rare to find a smith that is willing to work on them since not many have that much experience one them from a custom stand point like the 700's or m70's.

Where there's a will there's a way, and if you undertake the challenge and succeed in "tricking out" an A-bolt then it would be something truly unique and awesome.
But otherwise it would probably be easier and cheaper to start with one of the more common custom actions and build up from there.
good luck

A gentleman a few years back posted on his website a build on a Browning A-Bolt action. It was a sweet rig, 300RUM if I remember correctly. Kirby Allen was the smith who did the work. I think I have the link still on my home computer, if I do I'll try to post it tonight.

I know a guy that has a Jarrett Rifle built on and A-bolt action, so I guess he works on them. However, the rifle is pretty old 15+ years, not sure if he still does it. Also, if you have to go with Jarrett, you will have a fine rifle, but you will have paid damn near double what other smiths charge.

Re: Anyone custom a Browning A-Bolt?

I am not sure who did the work, but I have a stainless A-bolt that was worked over by a smith. Glass bedded, chambered to a 7mm stw, and trigger and it shoots awesome. It is a mule deer killing machine. So it can be done.

Good luck!!!
