So I bought a box of .338 cal 285 ELDM's from Cabelas the other day. ( ONly reason why I shopped there was I had a gift card)

I cut the factory sealed box open and noticed the tips look exactly like the old AMax and not the eldm tip. It is in the newer style box and I made sure the box said eld match.

Pretty sure somehow I ended up with some Amax bullets. The lot number is 33381

I seem to recall that after the ELD’s were introduced, the tip material was changed due to some patent infringement issue due to the color. If the shapes are near identical (base to ogive and nose length), this is probably what you have.

I had a couple of boxes from Midway that were the same way. They were mixed with some having opaque red tips and others a translucent red tip. I think it was just because they were in the transition of the tip change. The bullets all looked and measured the same.

This ^^^

There was some coopyright BS by a competitor, so the clear polycarbonate was changed to an opaque color to mitigate the lawyers and legal fees needed to defend the new tip. IIRC, @Rob01 mentioned it in a post I made with the same question a few years back (maybe two?).
