I am curious to know if anyone has broken the bolt handle off of a Sako TRG. After using the rifle for some time I still feel this is the most exposed weak link of the rifle.

I know Alpine 338 had a shipping accident with one and he also stated he knew of a hunter that somehow broke one on a tree. Just looking to see if any of you hunters or match guys who abuse your rifles may have broken one...

Yes I believe that this is definately a weak link in an otherwise robust design. Yes, they do break off, usually flush with the bolt body. The factory handle has a M6x1.0 threaded portion that's appx 6.35mm long that screws into the bolt body. That's a bit small in my opinion.

Would not hammer on one with a stuck bolt to hard or travel/haul around with the bolt in the rifle.

Lol, I haven't yet. Good to know I guess, I'll throw a vise grip in the range box. Hate to get stuck with a closed bolt mid string of a match...

Yea this is what I am afraid of.

So if I were to get out of my Sako to replace it with a more durable rifle, my only option for a factory rifle with 60 degree bolt throw, 2 stage trigger, user changeable barrels, etc. Is AI my next option???

Thanks for the feedback guys I greatly appreciate it!

yup, that or a Sig SSG3000 (which has a much better trigger than a AI IMO and they make a 22lr conversion kit for it too) they truely are underrated. Also the muzzle is threaded 18X1 so if you have a can for your TRG you can use it on the SSG3000 with no mods.

I was thinking this same thing a few minutes ago when I posted my reply. Damn good point. I know mine has never hesitated in over 4500 rounds.

I have been thinking I was crazy recently for putting so much thought into the subject. I was looking to hopefully put my mind to rest by gathering some insight from you guys.

    Thank you!

I guess I was implying sarcasm with the vise grip comment.. I'm not worried about busting the handle off of my bolt. I've sent some pretty hot loads through my 260 with no issues.

Hi just done a search for broken bolt handle on a mil spec TRG sniper rifle, as I have been told it is almost unheard of. Well last weekend whilst shooting McQueen competition I got an oversized round stuck in the breach, guess what, I broke the bolt handle removing it. Other than that it is without doubt the best rifle I have ever had the pleasure of owning.
