I have the ability to make a homeade suppressor. I have access to the tools and have a buddy who has worked in suppressor manufacturing.

Am I correct in understanding I can send off a Form 1 with my info as a manufacturer and a serial and once I receive the Form 1 back I can begin construction of the suppressor.

I would obviously need the length of the tube and etc. Just curious if anyone has ever attempted such. I am going to write the ATF a letter for clarification before I do this to ensure the legality.

As long as you are legally able to own a suppressor, then yes that is what you need to do. Fill out the F1 with length, diameter, etc. Send in and wait till approved before making any parts. Just remember you can always cut the tube down and be legit, but you can not make the tube longer after approved F1. Lots of info on silencertalk.com about F1 suppressors and the steps involved for your reading delight.

Here are a few tips. Do not leave anything blank that the applicant is expected to fill in. But do not supply a length. You do not want to lock yourself into any certain design while awaiting approval. The model number and serial number are anything you make up. Do not furnish any plans. Use a check so that you know when it is cashed. They will take about two weeks to cash the check and four months for approval.

It is my opinion that the fewer letters the ATF gets from gun owners the better. Letters just tend to give them more ideas on how to further restrict NFA weapons in general. Look into the GemTax story.

You can order the ATF form 1, form 5330.20 and fingerprint cards from the ATF's website, or download them from the ATF or http://www.subguns.com . Make sure you print out the ATF form 1 double sided and in duplicate. The best places for ideas, advice and law stuff are http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertalk.com .

If you use a trust or corp, the form is filled out the same way except you check corporation box instead of individual box at the top of the form and the name of the owner is the name of the corp or trust. You also do not need fingerprints or the sheriff's signature.

Here is an example.

Your info as a manufacturer? You are not an FFL/SOT class 2 right? Let me know if you have other questions. What are you making?

Runnoft? Were ji git that ideer? While this is not my favorite forum, it sure beats the hell out of http://www.thefirearmsforum.com and http://www.warrifles.com . The Firearms Forum is the most F'ed up forum I have ever been to. It is mainly a place for like minded back stabbers. The War Rifles forum is just full of whack jobs.

Along with what everyone else has said here its a lot of fun. When I did mine I had never used a lathe but I bought one and learned how to use it while waiting for the F1 to come back. It turned out quite well, I could have bought two cans for the price I paid but it was fun.

Thanks for the info. So don't put anything for the length?

That is fine. Gives me room to work.

I am going to build a titanium 308 can when I get the paperwork back

Also, under 4a you just put an address and not a name?

Thanks again.

Re: Anyone ever done a form 1 for homeade suppressor?

Opps, yes, you put your name along with the address in space 4a.

I have also heard that the ATF wants a length in space 4f. I have one pending since December 2009, but I will not fill in the length block with anything but N/A unless the ATF refuses to approve it.

Haha, I just hadn't seen anyone giving you a hard time lately. I did check and see when the last time you'd logged in was before posting that, and saw that you had logged in here the day before... Figured a little good natured poking was in order.
