Rifle Scopes Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

Hey I’m new here. I’m a member of several other forums, but I thought I’d join this one at the recommendation of a good friend of mine.

I’m looking to upgrade the scope on my target rifle. Currently, I have a VX II in a 6-18. The gun is a M700 varmint rifle with a HS stock in a .308

The gun is primarily a target rifle. It gets shot at 300 yards 1-2 times a week and 1-2 times a month out to 1000. I don’t do any competition, although I have a few friends who are pretty serious about it who are always pushing me to get out and do it. There may be some F class shooting in the future, although I would go mainly for fun and to learn more rather then as a serious competitor. I do occasionally hunt with this rifle when shots could be long and weight is not an issue.

I was originally looking at a night force 5.5-22, but my friend recommended looking at Vortex scopes. The Vortex Viper in a 6-24 caught my eye. My biggest concern is that they are a relatively new company and don’t really have a proven track record like night force.

The biggest priority I have would be that the scope tracks correctly. If it wasn’t designed to be repeatedly adjusted from 100 to 1000 yards, then it is probably not what I’m looking for. My second priority would be clear glass.

For hunting at a max range of 500 and informal shooting out to 1000 would I really see much benefit in getting a NF?

I also am looking at a mark 4 in 6.5-20 as another possibility. Given my intended use, what do you think?

Re: Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

I placed an order from midway for a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 for $750 with i think $8 shipping. From what I have heard they are pretty good scopes, which is why i purchased mine. I should be getting it in around the 15 of this month due to the fact that they were out of stock when I placed the order. When I get it in I plan on shooting with it that day if not the next so I will let you know what I think of it when it comes in! But as far as I've heard of Vortex scopes are pretty good, especially for under 1k.

Edited part: I have pretty much the same intentions for the rifle I am putting this scope on, besides the occasional hunting as of now.. may take it out yote hunting but as of now it's simply for fun distance shooting

Re: Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

I have several Vortex scopes in the Viper line. They are robust and well designed, with excellent optics (roughly the equal of the Leupold VX-3 line), and good mechanicals. Their warranty is top notch, as good as Leupold if not better, and they have been around for about 10 years (they are an outgrowth of Eagle Optics). They are good people, and do a very good job of putting out quality optics in different areas.

My scopes track well, and hold zero with no trouble, despite how badly I treat them as I hunt in heavy brush.

You'll see a very significant improvement on your VX-II, and I think you will not be disappointed. Like the previous poster, you are looking at a scope which is a part of the Viper PST line, more tactical, and which is just starting to ship. We are just starting to get reviews on it, but the reviews seem pretty outstanding.

I'm leaning toward the FFP model. Does the center of the crosshairs stay fine enough at higher magnification?

The search function. I recomend you try it.

The Vipers are very good scopes for the money. I've got them on two of my hunting rigs with no problems to report.

The thickness, and the gap in between the hash marks in relation to the target size will stay the same, meaning as you zoom in everything grows in size the target and the cross hairs thus covering the same area at any of the magnifications settings. This allows you to run your yardage as well as milling off for windage at any of the power setting when the conditions dictate changing your magnification.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

There are quite a few lengthy threads here on Vortex scopes.

Click ME! <----- That link will take you to Sniper's Hide very own Google Search Engine. Type in Vortex scopes and a ton of shit will come up.

Good luck.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

Thanks, I guess the big question is based on my intended use, am I really that much better off with a NF?

If a scope reliably does the task you bought it to perform, why spend more money?

I have the Vortex 6.5-20X44 with a 30 mm tube. I also have a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20X44 with a 30 mm tube. They are on Varmint rifles. If I need another it will be the Vortex. I've had no problems with either scope.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Vortex optics?

i put a 2x7 Vortex on my FAL .308 semi-auto rifle. I have thrown it, dropped, and abused it in many creative ways. It holds zero, adjusts accurately, and returns to zero.
