I recently acquired an old project Mauser that was rebarreled into a 30/06, the previous owner tried to polish or grind off the crest on the top and now its a deformed with grind marks and some of the crest left any suggestions on how to fill them would be greatly appreciated

Can't tell what type of Mauser action that is...
assuming it's not a commercial action, there is likely an importer and s/n engraved on the side of the receiver.

if you have that, the original numbering can be ground off as long as you don't disturb the S/N engraved by the importer

A careful hand with a TIG welder... important to minimize heat input. Here's a poor abused Winchester 52 project; note those holes are not on center line. The receiver was loosely screwed onto the original barrel, screws inserted, cut off and welded, then dressed down.M52TIG1.jpgM52TIG2.jpgM52TIG3.jpg
