anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

My plan right now is to go with the Hornady Lock and Load complete setup with some odds and ends here and there. I have been looking at the prep center but 300+$ has me debating it. Im just getting into reloading so someone who has it let us know.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

I have the RCBS prep center and hand trimmer and neck turner, the RCBS center with all the little add on heads for cutting primer pockets round, and cutting the crimp etc is only $150, with the neck turner and case length trimmer I have another 80 bucks into the whole Shebang and it does everythign.

I'm not sure what else the Hornady can do that it costs $300 bucks.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

I was wondering the same thing.Right now I have the RCBS manuel trimmer. I love it and it works great. Problem is that I would like the power unit to put on it. That's almost 2 bills and if I get the RCBS case prep center that adds another 100. So for 325( shipping for both ) roughly I would save 25 bucks from getting The RCBS set up over the Hornady set up. The real nice thing about the Hornady is it takes up much less bench space. This is a real good thing. If the quality is there the Hornady would be the best deal.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

I have an 'inline' little cordless drill that I put a flexi adapter on the Forster hand crank and it did my power adapter for the cost of a second hand power tool (I went to a GoodWill shop, but Harbor Freight might have one too) and the flexi coupling I got from the tool crib in Home Depot. Total was around 25 bucks. It works with a standard drill as well, it's just a little more bulky.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

I have the machine. It's just OK. there is a variance on case trimmming, which is what I really wanted it for, of about .002 from case to case. The adjustment is not the most precise however it is a lot easier than hand trimming. I don't like the primer pocket cleaner or uniformer either, too slow. I like using my cordless drill better for both. But trimming and throat prep works OK. I hope that helps. I do almost wish I went with the Giraud however from what I heard that has some play as well. I guess the OCD anal retention makes me hard to please.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

Im a dealer and the prep center for hornady cost me $280.00 so they arent cheap and they had problems when they first came out so they took them off the market for a while. They came back out and Ive heard they look nice and work ok but slow.

Re: anyone have the hornady brass prep machine?

I got one because Giraud will not do straight wall brass.
I use the RCBS 3 way cutter on it for .223, .308, 6.5 and .338LM so those cases I trim, chamfer and debur in one pass.
The other calibers I have to do one process at a time.
I also got the Hornady reamers which remove military crimps easily.
Giraud is faster and I may get one eventually, but the Hornady is reasonably fast especially with the 3 way cutters, but then again, I only go through 500 rounds per caliber a month max.
