I Just acquired 6# for a good price and after looking around data is scarce. I know Hodgdon has some loads on their site, but I was wondering if anyone has done any load development shooting 80's?

Gun is a 26", 7 Twist, using Win cases, 205M's 80 A-max

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

This is the first batch I did. I wasn't going to even shoot for groups cause of the wind but decide...what the heck. The 69 Siera's at 2.26 OAL did good. Looking forward to further development. Need to figure out the SD on the velocity. Not sure if its the powder or the Dillon 550. Next time I am going to throw a bunch of charges and see how consistant they are.

Hey, where in the U.P. I'm currently living in Marquette for school but I've got family in Esky, This may seem overly friendly but I'm not finding very many people locally to glean knowledge from so I'm being a bit aggressively outgoing.

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

HP friends of mine are saying 23.0-23.3 is the magic area for this powder and 77-80's. Most are getting around 2700 fps or so out of 20 in SR Barrels.
Some others over at US National Match forums are discussing it and have found similar results, and some have reported the ability to use more with the 80's seated out as is typical with AR's in HP for the 80's.

hope this helps.

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

This powder is capable of highest velocities, and in a 5.56 chamber can go well beyond the your expected maximums. 77 SMK's have approached the high side of 2,900 ft/secs in this rifle, and accuracy matches the shown target. Brass life is about 5 firing using Lake City cases however... too hot for me!

Similar results are being seen in the F Class Open and F T/R categories with the 80's seated well out and 30" barrels.

I get 2930 fps with a 30" Bartlein using 24.7 8208 XBR and JLK 80 VLD's seated to a coal of 2.510" - even so, it's still a .223 and to shoot it well you can't miss a wind call.

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

I recently started testing this powder with 75gr A-max's.

Started at 24gr in LC'09 brass, BR2 primer, COAL 2.485, 10/1000ths off the lands. Went up to 25.5grs. Best loads right at .5moa so far.
Rifle is a stock Savage VLP, 26in SS bbl, 1-9tw.
According to my chrono, vel started off at 2930fps, ended up at 3060fps for the 25.5gr load. I didnt believe the chrono, so shot them at 600yds yesterday. From 100yd zero, needed 11.5moa to 600yd.
Berger ball prog projected 11 moa, so I guess it really is going that fast.

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

I am getting a 69gn NCC with 24.0gns of 8208 running 3000 fps in my rifel and its just a 5R Milspec in a 223 with a 1:9 twist.my choice of brass is Lapua and the COAL is at 2.290.but just as one just said its really moveing fast with great accuracy.1 3/4 -1 7/8 at 300 all day long.

just try it and find out for your-self.

Re: Anyone having any luck with 8208 XBR in .223?

8208 XBR is smoking fast in .223 and .308.

I've done extensive work with it using 69/70 Sierras/Noslers/Bergers in .223...and 155 Bergers/Noslers/Sierras/Lapuas in .308.

I only do 10 shot group testing. This 3 and 5 shot stuff tells you very little.

After all the work I put in, I'm back to where I started at...Varget.
