Looking for a new place to shoot in Southern VA. I used to use the VIR range before they stopped letting the public rent it...
I have my 500yd home range but need a bit more distance to practice.
I don't mind timber areas or farms, just need a place to rent or train at distance near Chatham, Danville, Lynchburg, Appomattox Va area.
Thanks in advance if anyone knows a place?

VIR 434-822-7700. that is Virginia International Raceway. They had a thousand but I think they pushed it to 1500 yards. you have to schedule your time. They also have a 40 and 80' tower to shoot from 800 yards.

I didn't see that you said they didn't let the public use it anymore..Sorry
No problem bro, VIR changes with the wind it seems.
I've heard that Frontline Defense have a bunch of good guys, but they are almost 3hrs away from me.
Not a deal breaker but hard to get off of work and make that trip regularly.
Still, I appreciate your trying to help.

Ive not visited but herar this is a good place, though pricey.

Yes, it's unfortunate that good places like this have to cost so much in our neck of the woods.
I wish there was at least a family membership with this cost.
Still, you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.
2200yds is hard to beat around here...

Yeah, the $200 per year isnt bad but the $1000 inhiation fee would hurt. And no guests.

That’s ALOT cheaper than most.. I would pay that in second
Right?! If I were local, I’d pay that in a second for that kind of access. Most places hit you with 500-1000 as a buy in and then 200-400 yearly just to get to shoot on their 500yds at paper.
Someone in the AI pic thread posted a shot of his day there and I was instantly jealous.

$200 is great, but that $1000 initiation is tough for someone that may only live in the area for a few years. If I knew I could shoot there for 10 years, its a non-issue.

No guests is the limitation that really makes me hesitate. I get they don't want people that don't know how to handle their guns on a range like this, but there are ways to work with that. Make guests qualify at the 100 yard range, charge them $50 (cover the cost of testing them) and limit them to 2 times per year or something like that.

    I guess this is why I don't own/operate a range ;)

The weekends only kind of sucks as well. I like going to my local range early on week days to avoid the crowds that show up on wee ends.

lol crap I didn't even see weekends only, that makes it worse.

I would maybe only have a chance to shoot there 3-4 times a year then, hmmm such a tough call. I was also looking over at the Quantico range, that one does not look too bad to deal with, at least you get a 1000 yards there.

Unless your active duty the vetting for Quantico is tough.

I read it all, pretty certain I will be fine even though I am not active military. Just looks like a process. Worst case I have a military friend that lives nearby, I can most likely go as his guest.
You have to have the recommendation of a member to apply. Im 99% sure that now days you have to be vetted as a guest as well...Your friend would have to be a vetted member to go. Theyve really tightened it up since 911. I could be wrong but check with them.
