Would like to mount my IR Hunter on a bolt gun. My shooting window is very narrow so I will only have 1 shot and I am not interested in tracking a hog in the dark. Been there and too old to do it any more.
Yes I could use a 308 gas gun but am more comfortable with my bolt gun. Still can't shoot the gas gun consistently well.

Rough look I would have to cut 4-6 inches off a stock to get close enough to the scope. Any other options?

I'm not sure what you mean. Why can't you just mount it to the rail and go?

You cant get close enough to the objective of the thermal. You have to be (? assume) on the eye cup to open the flapper in the cup. With a normal 0 or 20 moa rail on a bolt gun you are 5-6" away when trying to get in shooting position.

Just starting out with this so I am assuming you have to use the eye cup.

Yup, I put my eye cups in the parts box ... don't need them but being too far back from the scope doesn't work for shooting ... not really just for looking either ... it would be just like mounting your day scope 6 inches too far forward on the rail ...
:)

This is what I did: I've got an IR Defense Hunter Mk3 35mm - Initially tried to find a way to mount it on my bolt gun. No joy ( with extended rails ). Eventually moved it to an AR platform where it has worked well. Still figured there had to be a way to mount it on my bolt gun. Finally saw it on one of O'Neil Ops videos:

TNVC DVR System

I used HD Velcro to mount the LCD screen to a Butler Creek eyepiece flip up cap ( using it closed ). Ran the cord to the thermal. BINGO !! Works great. Like watching a small TV. The only downside is that it casts a glow back on my face - so I have to use a sniper veil to cover it and my head while using it.

Watch the O'Neil Ops video " Suppressed Nitemare" about 4 minutes into the video when they are on the hay bales.............

What I did that worked, was get a Pulsar. The (totally non-sexy mounts that people like to replace with QD mounts) actually are very kewel ... that can be setup as cantilever forward or cantilever rear ... or no cantilever ... the rear option allows use on bolt gun with no risers).

Here is APEX 50mm on .300WM(24) ... this worked fine for heated steel at 500yds ...
