I've got a m44 carbine that I'm thinking about having the headspace fixed. If the smith has to pull the barrel would it be a good idea to get away from the 7.62x54r?
Do you have another chambering in mind with similar rimmed case head dimensions to the x54R? I could maybe, maybe see rebarreling it to a better barrel, maybe, if it had sentimental value. But changing the chambering could get interesting.
Ummm...why? TBH, I wouldn't even have one fixed for headspace. It'd just become a wall hanger (if the HS issue is dangerous). With the exception of collector type ones, most Mosin's aren't work the $ to mess with. They are what they are.

This was my initial thought as well, and remains the dominant one on this topic. I’d never sink money into any Nagant that wasn’t a collectors item with bonafides.
Were it me, I’d save the money and get a Finnish Nagant if you want a Nagant that’ll shoot better. I’m still hankering for one.
