Thinking about a getting an additional barrel for my AI/AE. Is there anyone out there that has any experience running a .284 winchester and 168gr match bullets on short action AI?

What barrel length (26"?) and twist (1:9"?) seems to work?

I turned my 6.5x284 into a 260 Rem and now have 500 original .284 Win cases that I get to neck back up from 6.5 to .284 ... so much fun.

Good shooting ...

Tried running a short action 284 in AI chassis - rifle is fine but used Alpha mags to get the rounds a little longer COAL. Never could get the velocities up to really be an advantage. Shoot 284 in long action in AI - getting 3020 w/ 162 a-max & RL-17. Have shot with 300s and used same wind calls.

I have a .284 win built on rem 700 LA and a 26in. bbl get 3172 avg from 140 accubonds. Have a 162 a-max load that i could spend more time on and get it a little better. Shooting right at 3000 fps also with RL-17. I also contemplated a SA. but already had a long action on hand so no brainer for my situation.

Thanks to all for the feedback and suggestions. Even though there does not seem to be much advantage to a 7mm in an SA over a .260, I may have to go ahead anyway. I hate to waste all of the .284 brass I have laying around

I'm currently in testing/load development with my SA 284. I've seen 3050fps with 54.5 H4350/162amax @ 2.955" COAL, though that is overpressure. 2975 with 52.5-53.0 looks reasonable though. This is with a barrel that measures 25.5" recoil lug to crown.

Honestly, I'm not seeing "neutering" of this cartridge that seems to be the standard response around here in regard to running this cartridge on a SA. I'm also getting 2800-2835 with a 180smk.

However, should you choose not to do it, and that 284 brass needs a new home - please let me know!

Agree with Turbo
Sure you may not be able to load to ideal OAL
but it will work, better than most say who insist you must run a long action.

I,m crunching data myself via QL to determine if it will work in my configuration
S/A and short barrel (22")

If you go forward i suggest running 284 shehane
neck and shoulder remain same body gets blow out removing some taper, better feeding, couple that with single stack mag and you can run 2.975 OAL. Double stack mags ie Alpha and standard case profile has issues feeding @ 2.975, thou i suspect a single stack would remedy
