Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

dntfxr,

They work fine with IMR, VV, Winchester, and the Hogdon powders I've tried them with.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

WLR have worked great in my rifles with many powders. I'm not skilled enough of a shooter to find any fall off in accuracy from using them rather than BR2s or 210Ms, though I think the latter are more consistent.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

Some of the lowest Extreme Spread and Standard Deviation numbers I have recorded have been shot with Winchester WLR primers. Actually they are my favorite domestic primers.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

Agreed. WLR's have worked excellent in my rifle and its hard to pass over $1 difference in price for a box of 100 from a BR2 or 210M.

Love the Winchester primers! They produce great results with every powder I have loaded them with! They really love RL15, 4064, and 4895.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

The guys at HSM clued me in on wlr's over twenty years ago. Being of sound mind and hard head I kept right on using 210M's at a buck a box more. These days I load a lot of WLR's and can find no fault with them. They have successfully lit H4831,H4350,4064, 3031, BLC2, Varget, H4895, and probably some others I don't remember. Their quality would be way down on my list of things to worry about.
Currently; LC 03 brass,WLR, 46 gr. Varget, 175SMK,* NOTE* DO NOT TRY THIS LOAD BLINDLY*** develop the load for your rifle!!

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

I find they shoot well in my 243 better than Fed 210 or Rem .
However in the 308 and 30-06 I lean towards Fed 210.
There is no right or wrong primers . You use what works for you and your gun.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

I have never did a head to head test, only changing primers to see if I could tell a difference. I have Winchester, CCI BR, and Federal BR. All produce loads that shoot very good. If you are a super anal bench rest shooter you might be able to tell one primer from another, MABY. A tactical shooter I doubt can tell any difference between them.
For my 204 I also use Remington BR. they seem to shoot just fine also.
With components being a little hard to get I figure lots of folks are trying different components right now.

I think I will probably not go back to Federal BR when things loosen up on components. Mainly because I hate the Giant Box. No reason to put up with the huge box if they shoot about the same as CCI BR and WLR. Just my opinion for what its worth.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

This all goes back to if the glass is half full or half empty concept. Faster isnt always better...sometimes slower perfects the inperfections.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

IME in .308, the WLRs give about 30 fps faster velocity, and they flatten at bit more at lower pressures than CCI 200s. 175s and 155s, Varget, 4064, TAC and a few other powders. Just haven't used the Federals enough to compare, as I shoot a gas gun and believed all the slam-fire hype about primers...

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

Wow. Thats the complete opposite in my rifle. I get about 15fps slower when using them. Just goes to show ya how different someone elses rifle can react. Very interesting.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

In one of Glen Zedker's books, "Handloading for Competition", I believe, I'm not home now, or I would post the page number, has a section on primer comparision and Winchester provided the fastest and highest pressures. The test was done with 4895 powder in Lake City cases and 168 grain SMK. The other primers in the test were CCI, Federal and I think one other, I'm not home, so I can't look it up.

Those results still need work. Adjust your charge and seating depth for better results. Get your ES at least into the low teens and your SD in the low single digits. That load will be disappointing past 600 yards. Just saying.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

I like the WLR in .308 seem to get good results with it and R15. Didn't work as well with Varget as a CCI. FGMMs showed more vertical dispertion than either of those. That was changing only primers and not developing a load with that primer, I saw as much as a half MOA shift by changing primers so I believe it is something worth investigating.

Re: Anyone use or prefer WLR primers in .308?

Performance-wise, I find Winchester primers to work as well as I can shoot. It seems to me that they are a little smaller and don't fit as tightly in some cases as others, which is sometimes good and sometimes not so good. YMMV.
