Hi All,
I have a low budget build that I am working on, and I ordered a Thumbhole stock from Boyds for it. Wow, when I got the stock the first thoughts was "How much Inleting will I have to do"!I couldn't believe it, about 15 mins. and it would be ready to finish. Is there any reason not to use one of these stock's for a High Dollar Build? I sure would hope to here from some of you guys. Every other post I have asked have been answer very professional.
Thanks for your time!
Greg

Re: Anyone Using Lamanite wood stocks?

I don't know about Boyds to much, but I once had a customer bring in a Richards Micro Fit laminate stock, which required a bit of fitting, but it worked out great. This customer went on to become a freind, and I have been able to watch him shoot this rifle for about three years now with no problems. I think laminated stock are just fine.

I'd say have of the bench rest/f-class shooters use laminate stocks. Those are pretty precise rifles aren't they?

Laminate stocks are fine as long as all surfaces are sealed. They're very stable and very stiff.

Re: Anyone Using Lamanite wood stocks?

I've used several of Joel Russo's laminated stocks and they worked great , he makes an A5 clone and honestly I like it better than McMillan because I can shape it to fit my hand better , I have a big and and like to have a grip fit into my palm , I can cut the stock back some and create a palm swell as well and bring down the area behind the tang making it more comfortable for my thumb to ride their

I got a cheap, unfinished laminate from gunbroker for $100, inletted it myself, bedded it myself, cut out the bbl channel, added flushcups, modded the length of pull and oiled it.
Works pretty well I think:

Nothing wrong with cheap if you're looking to learn how to make it work. I was reluctant to hack up a $500 McMillan, you know?

Re: Anyone Using Lamanite wood stocks?

Being left handed, most factory stocks are built around the other hand of the world. I installed a Boyds on my R700 223, it took a little effort to get the fit correctly but its much nicer to shoot now. I still need to install pillar blocks but thats easy with the correct tools.

Re: Anyone Using Lamanite wood stocks?

I've got a Boyds Thumbhole on mine and it works OK but it will eventually go. I shoot an occasional tactical match and the running around shooting off baracades, trees, etc dings it up pretty good. Ducking into a hyde to shoot chipped off a small piece that I glued and screwed back on. I also put a pad on the forend because popping up the stock on those baracades was really trashing the foreend. If you are shooting off a bench all the time it's fine but the Boyds Thumbhole is not really that durable for the tactical shooter. I also shoot left handed occasionally and the Boyds Thumbhole is not condusive to left hand shooting. I've got 2-3k more rounds before I figure my barrel starts to go away so when I rebarrel it will get a manners.

Just my 2 cents.

I have a Bobby Hart on one of my rifles. Stocky's carries them, some versions have aluminum bedding blocks, mine is the aluminum pillar version. Not a high dollar build but still nice to shoot.

Joel Russo makes great laminate stocks we have a couple that he's done and they are fantastic.

Goodluck with your build and post pics of your stock.
