If you had around $500 to get a decent spotting scope for the range 100-300 yards what way would you go. There just to many products out there for me to figure this out. I did look at the Nikon prostaff 5 20x60x82 ... Its alittle over $600.... I really want to buy once... Thanks WD

First off let me tell you that I do some freelance PR work for Nikon, that being said, I will give you my honest opinion on my experiences with the PROSTAFF 3/5 and the ED50. Yes, the ED50 is a bit more expensive but incredibly clear. I don't have one but borrow a buddies and forget to return it all the time. Very clear, compact and I see see bullets impact from the 200 yard range at my club. I have also used the PROSTAFF 3 and 5 at long range shooting events. The 5 has a sharper image as you would expect and for some reason I noticed les of a mirage even with the Texas heat. We could see bullet impacts on steel targets at 500 yards with both fieldscopes, though picking out bullet holes even from a shoot-n-c target would be tough. I like the straight tube for mounting on a tripod and all the scopes are easy to use with coarse and fine focus.

Here's a pic of my buddies ED50 which we often take on vacation to check out the scenery.
