I have built an Very short 9" SBRed upper for my AR10T...

That was what I considered the shortest realistic length with custom cut gas tube and gas port.

I am curious how badly the round stability will be effected.

I know it will be a great deal of change, but I am curious if anyone has any experience?

Do I risk a can strike it is so bad..... or just keep targets close.

Re: AR 10 Shortest Possible Barrel

Thanks, I didn't catch it in my search.

But my basic curiousity isn't answered.

I know the ballistics and kinetics are weak, I am curious about flight stability and yawing. I know there will be lots more instability, just curious if anyone can quantify how bad.

1 in 10 twist factory barrel cut to 9".

Re: AR 10 Shortest Possible Barrel

man i gotta see pictures of that thing,. my Armalite has a 24 inch Rock Creek on it,..... i can't even begin to imagine the blast from a 9 inch tube.

Re: AR 10 Shortest Possible Barrel

My .308 Noveske 12.5" AR10 has a 1:10" twist and it performs very well out to 300 yards. Have not tried shooting it any further than that. No baffle strikes and very stable with 155-178 grain bullets.
Stability will probably be okay especially with 150-155 grain bullets. You are going to have to use a very fast burning powder and I am sure that it will still erode your can out very quickly with a 9" barrel.

Re: AR 10 Shortest Possible Barrel

I've shot the POF out to 800 yards. 12.5", it hammers at 600 yards and dies rapidly after that. At 800 you can't really get it on steel, but it does reach. We had zero issues consistently hitting at 600.

Re: AR 10 Shortest Possible Barrel

I've read before and been told not to put a can on anything shorter then a 10.5" bbl
But you might be fine. not sure

Ok, so 12 inches.... Things appear smaller to me due to...

well you know!

So what I am hearing is that I should have no bullet instability issues.

You would think, but then you would also be wrong...

12.5" POF

Mid shot with a minimal flash,

I am sure at night it would be much worse but the flash is not nearly as bad as you would think.

We were using Black Hills at the time.

Beautiful rifle Frank, Glad to hear your getting that type of range out of that short of a barrel, I wouldnt expect it.
