AR-10 vs a FN-Fal

No dude, the most accurate 762 is the M1A.
I like M14s but that's a real stretch.

I've never seen, heard of, nor read of a precision FAL.

The USAMU set the long range interservice rifle team 1000-yard record at Quantico in 2012 using AR-10s, besting all previous M1, M14, and M16 scores.

I was obviously kidding.
FAL, G3, M1A … none of these really qualify as “precision” platforms … even if you dump a lot of coin in them

Plenty of modern gassers out there to scratch that itch

Yes... by about 5 fold.
I wouldn't go that far, dollar for dollar. IIRC FN-FAL's are 3 to 4 MOA rifles on average, probably quite similarly are G3 types (PTR91).

Say just as an example $1,500 today. For what could be bought of each platform (FN-FAL/G3 type/AR10) at the $1,500 price. More likely 2 ish fold better towards the AR.

However that's where the AR can be improved, and the others just can't.

Getting up into more expensive AR10 types? Absolutely towards 3plus fold betterment out of the box likely.

However its all kind of like comparing apples with oranges.

-IMO.

Five fold is probably conservative. The FAL is probably a five MOA rifle on its very best day. Tilting bolts are not conducive to accuracy.

Do you even Rhodesia bruh?

…seriously though, yeah the FAL is the clear winner for actual proven use in ‘wartime’ situations, and hands down the FAL > AR10 for cool points/style, but I’ll bet even my lightweight AR10 with a cheap-ass Faxon 16” pencil barrel that’s 1.5 MOA on a good day, with good ammo, is more accurate.

They can keep the shorts can't imagine wearing those things into combat.

I wonder what Africa would look like if the West hadn't abandoned those two countries down there. Probably a lot more industrious and organized.

Those Rhodesian boys were tough mudders, some will remember the pre internet era with Soldier of Fortune and Shotgun news where these pics were common place and the stories were "interesting" to say the least............

I remember those things at gun shows when I was a kid. From what I understand before Rhodesia collapsed they were recruiting anybody to go fight the commies.

The better AR-10 variants crush the FAL family in the accuracy department. But my StG58 clone with Hensoldt 4X and a trigger job will shoot around 1.5 MOA with RUAG ammo.

The FAL is definitely sexier.

OK, NEW HERE, BUT BEEN SHOOTING HI-POWER BATTLE RIFLES FOR HALF A CENTURY (where the hell has the time gone??)
I was mustered out USMC in '75, became a cop in '79, and at 6'3" and 220, by 81 was in the lead when kicking doors on DFW (dangerous felony warrants) assignments
When i wasn't carrying a Mossberg 500 12ga bullpup, i carried a 181 series Mini-14 in a pistolgrip folding stock. But to the point.
As a DFW officer, I was allowed to qualify with personally-owned weapons, and did so regularly. I have owned and qualified on the CQB and long range rifle course with multiple MBRs, along with multiple 5.56 carbines. The first MBR was an StG-58 built on a parts kit with a Imbel lower in '84 by an older Korean-era USMC armorer friend who shortened the barrel to 18" and reattached the original flash hider. It shot right with my buddy's Supermatch M1A in '86 (i think - time blurs as you get older) with the same ammo, but law school books forced its sale. in '91 to a bailiff buddy. Then there was a pair of Garands and the standard M1A (young cop discovered the tax write-off capability - serially owned); didn't hurt that the wife liked shooting them also.
Back then, in the late '80s and early '90's, 308 AR platform rifles were either too expensive or too trouble-prone to be worth my time.
But in the 2010s, their price came down and my interest went up, to where, alongside a pair of AR-15 carbines, there rests in the safe a pair of LR-308s, one with an 18" barrel and a decent LER 4x10 scope, one with a 22" barrel in 6.5CM, and another 30-06 Garand (4.3M SA, gift from my younger brother).
Yes, I have also owned an HK-91, an FN-49 in 308, a Hakim in 8mm, and an STV-40 that was sold when is broke for the second time. So I have a basis for my opinions. More rounds down range than I can count. And if you're interested, it is not IMHO, despite often being a sample of one.
Being a boomer, I love steel and wood, and truly respect and covet an 18" M!A, but can't justify it when my 18" LR-308 is paid for and does it all for me.
Yes, the current Garand goes to the range a couple times yearly with me, and blasphemous as it sounds, have considered sending it to Shuff for a BM-59E conversion with M1A mags, but as a curator of that particular piece of history, maybe a CMP field grade is a better candidate.
Take the opinion for what its worth. AR platform 308s are the better prospect for serious work, but the M1A is a respectable performer and just plain fun to shoot.

I love my FAL, it’s fairly accurate (maybe 2.5 to 3 moa), but the inexpensive AR-10 I got from Palmetto State Armory out shoots it every time.

I hang on to the FAL because it is a very soft shooter, and is fun as hell.

sexier is an understatement!!!!!!!!!!
yep, loved my StG-58 on an Imbel upper built back in the day, barrel shortened to 18", shot great, plenty accurate, just needed a welder's glove for extended range sessions (even with folded bipod, handguards got HOT). Miss it, but my AR-10 with BCA 18" SOCOM upper is a keeper, my go-to for too many reasons, not the least of which is that it's 5"@300 with right ammo.
