Rifle Scopes AR-10 w/ A2 upper

Re: AR-10 w/ A2 upper

Here you go:

http://www.armsmounts.com/default.asp?mode=products&sub=mounts&id=[hsh]02 Ext

I can't get the link to hotlink because of ARMS @#$%^&* URL. Copy and paste the entire line, including the "02 Ext" part into your browser and it should work. If not, go to ARMS website directly and look up the #02 AR-10 carry handle mount. It will work and allow you to continue using your irons.

That would be to replace the A2 upper with a flat top and install a flip-up rear sight and a scope in a QD mount.

I have seen Swan mounts come loose from the vicious recoil of a 5.56mm rifle. There is no way I would trust it with a .308.

A Swan mount would restrict you to a non-magnified optic. If you installed a rail on the carry handle you would still have issued with it loosening up and have to rig up a riser to get the correct cheek weld. Then you height over bore will be ridiculous.

These were all reasons the flat top upper was adopted. Once you pay for a bunch of mounts and realize they suck, you would have already spend as much as swapping upper receivers.

You can buy a complete AR-10 A4 upper for around $320 and then turn around and sell your complete A2 upper for at least that if not a little more. Just move your barrel assembly from the A2 to the A4 and start shooting.

Re: AR-10 w/ A2 upper

Brownells sells an extended A2 rail that mounts very low on the AR-10. I have an NXS 2.5-10 x 24mm mounted with low Warne rings and the cheekweld is very good. I drilled a second hole in the handle to allow mounting the rail almost flush with the rear sight at full elevation.

Might also try a standard leupold or other 1-4x variable, the smaller the ocular lens housing the better. You want your mount as low as possible. If this fits you, you will find the A2 fixed sights are better than the removable jobs and your scope will be very fast to use. Flat top is nice with a longrange scope, but really did you buy your rifle to be a dedicated longrange rifle or to be a multi-task weapon? If the latter, look into ways to hold onto all the benefits of your A2 system before ditching it...

An A2 AR-10 will easily handle 600 -750yd ranges with as much precision as a scoped A2 might try a NM rear apperture and tune your ammo to your particular rifle....

Re: AR-10 w/ A2 upper

The only problem w/ selling the upper and buying a new 1, is this Ar-10 is a Armalite Realtre factory camo match. It's not just the furniture, the peice is completly camo from the factory. I bought it cause it looks great, and then figured out I needed a flat top for what I will be doing. So if anyone would like to trade or make an offer, it has less then 200 rounds down it and does not have a scratch on it.

Re: AR-10 w/ A2 upper

Armalite made A4 uppers/rifles with the real tree coating on them, but they didn't make a ton of them so I don't know how easy a time you'll have finding one. You may want to contact Armalite directly and see if they can help you out. Their CS folks are top notch and if they know of a source for an upper (or if they'll be making another run of them in the future) or for the coating itself, they'll hook you up.

Also, it isn't that difficult to have a rifle (or an upper in your case) camo'd. For example, check with Nick at GRT...the thread (which contains his contact info) can be found here:

Finally, if you want a different configuration rifle and you don't want to deal with parts swaping, etc., then you may want to consider selling your rifle in its entirety. Then, go find an Armalite (or other AR-10 type rifle) that meets your needs. As I said above, you can always get a new rifle refinished with realtree or any of the many different camo finishes available these days.
